Exploring China's New Billion-Dollar Film Boom - Cannes 2025

Today on the Marché main stage, Silvia Wong of Screen International spoke with Cedric Behrel (Executive Director and Co-founder, Trinity Film CineAsia), Chen Sicheng (Director/Screenwriter/Actor/Executive Producer), and Chen Yu (Screenwriter/Director, Professor of Peking University) to discuss the current cinema market in China and how it is continually one the #1 market for cinema worldwide. The host opened the panel with a message to the world: The Chinese government supports its filmmakers and is open and inclusive to international partners. We hope to engage in more dialogue, collaboration, and mutual support with filmmakers around the world," said Behrel. Another major topic in the discussion around Chen Sicheng's next project, 'Malicious', is a film with a focus on cyberviolence. While speaking about the movie, Chen Yu chimed in with his view on the future of technology, specifically through AI: "AI might replace us if you think of art as repetitive work." Yu took the strong stance that human art is irreplaceable, and no matter how good AI may get, it will only ever create stories without soul. The panel concluded with Behrel speaking on the Achievements of one of their latest films, Detective Chinatown 3: "We had a treasure hunt in London Chinatown to win premiere tickets, we had a premiere at the biggest cinema in the UK 'BFI IMAX', and we were also able to release the film in France." This panel highlighted the true powerhouse that is the Chinese Cinema Market, and that China wants to keep it that way.
