HOLZER: I hope big companies are sincere
The opening of the festival, organized in cooperation with Bozcaada Municipality and Kadıköy Municipality Sinematek/Sinema House, was held in Bozcaada and live broadcasted on the YouTube channel. In the opening that hosted by Nazlı Salcıoğlu, festival director Petra Holzer stated, ‘In the past, no one took the concepts of "environment" and "ecology" seriously in our country. Especially big companies. These days, everyone is talking about the environment. I hope this is not a sign of going from a state of ignorance to a state of greenwashing. I hope it's sincere. Must be sincere. That is what we, about fifteen people, work for all year.’
Özgüven: We are not stupid or guilty
‘We are organizing this festival to show these unpleasant-to-watch, contrarian documentaries.’ said festival coordinator Ethem Özgüven, and he ended his speech adding, ‘Today, a significant part of the documentaries show Chinese youth, whose average death rate is twenty years, Bangladeshi children who dye textiles, and little girls who sew those dyed textiles in secluded and stuffy workshops in Istanbul. They cannot escape from these orientalist approaches.
And I beg you once again, as a third world person. We are not stupid, we are not guilty. Sudanese babies, Syriac girls, Iraqis, Cubans, Afghan women are not guilty. But victim.’
The jury: Mücella Yapıcı, Nazmi Ulutak, Aslı Odman, Márcia Gomes de Oliveira, Andrijana Stojkovic and Juliana Paniagua will determine the winner in International Competition. And Gaia Student Award will be announced by Elif Demoğlu, Benjamin Huguet and Sam Plakun.
