Image

We're delighted to reveal the full programme for the 2022 edition of Open City which is our first to take place fully in person since 2019 and will run from 7-13 September 2022.

Over the course of 7 days, we'll be screening 93 new  and retrospective non-fiction films at venues across the city including Bertha DocHouse, Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image, Close-Up Cinema, Curzon Soho, Genesis Cinema, Institute of Contemporary Arts, LUX, Tate Modern and our Festival Hub

Bringing together perspectives from across the globe with projects from 25 countries included in the programme, this year's festival will also showcase practices from the cutting edge of non-fiction filmmaking, including 4 world premieres and 27 UK premieres.

The programme extends beyond traditional film screenings with a varied schedule of talks and workshops taking place every day of the festival at our Festival Hub where the Expanded Realities programme will also be taking place.

Once more, the festival celebrates the work of women filmmakers with two “In Focus” programmes on Alexandra Cuesta and Betzy Bromberg, which constitute the first in-depth surveys of both artists’ work in the UK.

Tsuchimoto Noriaki (1928-2008) occupies a central place in the history of documentary filmmaking in postwar Japan. The retrospective Tsuchimoto Noriaki: Film is a work of living beings will take place throughout September in various venues across London.

Open City Documentary Festival 2022 also includes new works by Sherko Abbas, Diego Acosta, Maddi Barber & Marina Lameiro, Robert Beavers, Ruth Beckermann, Teresa A Braggs, Maeve Brennan, Patxi Burillo, Tom Chick, Alexandra Cuesta, Daniela Delgado Viteri, James Edmonds, Dora Garcia, Libertad Gills, Martín Baus, Eva Giolo, Raphaël Grisey, Bouba Touré, Wiame Haddad, Che-Yu Hsu, Onyeka Igwe, Maxime Jean-Baptiste, Jessica Johnson & Ryan Ermacora, Niki Kohandel, Sasha Litvintseva & Beny Wagner, Jumana Manna, Rosalind Nashashibi, Jonathan Perel, Morgan Quaintance, Ben Rivers, Mario Rodríguez Dávila, Margaret Rorison, Marcy Saude, Tiffany Sia, Rhea Storr, Hope Strickland, Elisabeth Subrin, Maryam Tafakory, Oraib Toukan, Ana Vaz, Zhang Mengqi and Zheng Lu Xinyuan.

Patxi Burillo's Argileak proposes cinema as a mystical experience. A nocturnal pilgrimage through the woods near Ezkio in Northern Spain revisits the history of the apparitions of the Virgin in the 1930s that drew thousands from all over Spain to this small Guipuzcoan village.

Counter-archives

“Counter-archives” is series of discussions and presentations happening throughout the festival’s “Talks programme” which propose expansive ways of thinking about the “archive”, considering not just the films themselves but also questions of labour, reparation and imagination.

Mutzenbacher

Ruth Beckermann’s feature uses the 1906 novel Josefine Mutzenbacher or The Story of a Viennese Whore, published anonymously, as a starting point to grapple with male sexuality.

Maria Schneider, 1983

The starting point for Elisabeth Subrin’s Maria Schneider, 1983 is a 1980s TV interview with the French actress that Subrin encountered whilst developing a feature-length biopic about Schneider.
