UNIFRANCE looks back at Berlinale boasting with 18 prizes awarded to French films

The 73rd edition of the Berlinale ended on February 26 with a prize list that honored French cinema in its plurality. The Year of the Documentary in France opens wonderfully with the Golden Bear awarded to the remarkable film by Nicolas Philibert, On the Adamant (to be released in France on April 19). And it was another, singular documentary, Orlando, My Political Biography by Paul B. Preciado, which received four awards, including the Special Jury Prize – Encounters (ex aequo) and the Documentary Prize – Special Mention. These awards highlight the vitality and creative strength of the genre. Philippe Garrel was awarded Best Director, with the Silver Bear for the moving The Plough. In total, no less than 18 prizes were awarded to the French films that made up the majority of the films shown in Berlin this year, a tremendous harvest! Unifrance warmly congratulates all the teams of the awarded films.

March got off to a great start with several key events: first, the Unifrance y EFP Miami Mercado, which has just ended on the sidelines of the Miami Film Festival, and then, at this very moment, the Rendez-Vous With French Cinema in New York, whose 28th edition was inaugurated by the screening of the magnificent Paris Memories by Alice Winocour, in the presence of the director and Virginie Efira. The program of this edition iss particularly emblematic of the dynamism of our cinema and its new generation of auteurs and directors, who also made the trip: Rebecca Zlotowski, Cédric Ido, Patricia Mazuy, Léa Mysius, Lise Akoka, Sébastien Marnier, Dominik Moll, Christophe Honoré, Nicolas Pariser, and Rachid Hami, to name just a few. Producers and sellers were also part of the sterling French cinema delegation.

After more than two years of disruption due to the pandemic, these Rendez-Vous were sold out and attracted younger spectators, demonstrating the renewed interest of the American public in our productions. The screenings were complemented by fascinating discussions and masterclasses, a component that Unifrance particularly values for the meetings and exchanges that these key events foster between professionals, spectators, students, and the press, and which contributes to the success of our event as well as to the influence of our productions. This is why it is so important for artists to take part in the event and accompany their films abroad, which is essential if we want to keep our creative work alive and vibrant beyond our borders.

And we are awaiting, at the end of March, a fine French delegation (more than 15 guests), in Rome for the Rendez-Vous with New French Cinema. Accompanied by a day of meetings for professionals, this edition will open with François Ozon's My Crime, which the director will present, along with Nadia Tereszkiewicz. Also expected is the team of Sitting Duck, led by its director Jean-Paul Salomé, and lead actress Isabelle Huppert.

The period is also marked by a highlight for the audiovisual industry with the upcoming return of Séries Mania, in Lille, from March 17 through 24. The 100% series festival, now a must for both the general public and international professionals, will open with a French series, Salade grecque, by Cédric Klapisch, which jubilantly continues the director's film trilogy. And once again, French series will have a special place in the festival with 17 works across all the sections.

For this 13th edition of Séries Mania, Unifrance will partner the opening cocktail reception and will organize the 8th edition of Coming Next From France – the flagship "industry" event – which will highlight five French series available or soon to be available on the international market. Finally, Unifrance's public promotional program will once again showcase the works and those who make them, with daily interviews with the artistic teams of works selected in the festival: writers, directors, showrunners, and actors will be promoted throughout the festival. We invite you to join us on our social networks to discover them!

Serge Toubiana, Daniela Elstner, and Hervé Michel,
President, Executive Director, and Vice President of Unifrance
