The 40th edition of the Goya Awards will be held in Barcelona

Barcelona will host the 40th edition of the Goya Awards, as announced this Tuesday by the president of the Spanish Film Academy, Fernando Méndez-Leite, during an event held at the institution's headquarters. The first time the Goya Awards were held outside of Madrid was also in Barcelona, during the 14th edition—marking the first ceremony in history to take place outside the capital.

"25 years after our Goya Awards in Barcelona, today we announce our return to a city closely tied to cinema and an excellent stage for the Goya Awards; a European city known around the world that undoubtedly offers all the necessary conditions to host an event of this scale, helping us to enhance its international impact and reaffirming the Academy’s commitment to a plural, open, and territorially diverse culture," Méndez-Leite stated.

The Academy president expressed gratitude for the “trust and involvement” of the institutions supporting the event: the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council. "We will work hand in hand to make this 40th edition of the Goya Awards in Barcelona a great celebration, where, in addition to honoring the outstanding achievements of our cinema in 2025, we can also reflect on the history of the Goya Awards on such a significant date as this 40th anniversary," he added.

Last year. for the first time in the history of the Goyas, the Goya for Best Feature Film, was awarded to two films:  the historical drama set in 1970s Barcelona, The 47 directed by Marcel Barrena and the thriller set in the Basque   Country Undercover, directed by Arantxa Echevarría.
