Overview of the US business for the week of Monday, March 29th

On the first weekend of Spring, Universal's Nobody opened and took top spot on the box office charts, earning an estimated $6.7M  while playing at 2,460 theatres across North America. The R-Rated action thriller stars Bob Odenkirk, best known for his portrayal of lawyer Saul Goodman in the popular TV series Breaking Bad and its successful spin-off Better Call Saul.  Disney's animated family adventure Raya and the Last Dragon contributed another $3.5M to the weekend box office, now with a total cume to-date of $28.4M after four weeks in theatres. Warner Bros.' live-action animated Tom & Jerry drew $2.5M in its fifth weekend, adding up to a cume of $37M.

We offer two Popcorn Previews video features this week, highlighting two of the most anticipated action films opening in the months ahead. Check out the Boxoffice Buzz on Warner Bros.' Godzilla Vs. Kong, which opens this Wednesday 3/21, and news on Disney's updated plans to release its Marvel superhero blockbuster Black Widow, re-scheduled to open in theatres on 7/9.

Our summary of Industry News starts with a focus on exhibition giant Cineworld, and their announcement last week of the timeline for reopening their theatres worldwide during April, including their 566 Regal Cinemas locations across the U.S.  Their reopening schedule is timed to coincide with the release of two Warner Bros. blockbusters - Godzilla Vs. Kong (3/31) and Mortal Kombat (4/16). We report on Disney's flurry of adjustments to its release plans over the next several months, most notably a 2-month postponement for Black Widow, which has been moved from 5/7 to 7/9.  Disney also announced that it will make Black Widow and Cruella (5/28) avaialble on Disney + on the same date when they are released to theatres, as a premium $30 on-line rental.

In the Hollywood Report, Martin Grove discusses the impact that Disney's release changes will have on exhibition, expressing optimism that the later release date will actually generate more revenue at the box office than would have flowed from the earlier release date.

Our Studio Release Calendar provides details on film releases through the beginning of June. We conclude with a list of the most recent studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements and one important new trailer released last week.
