In all, around 100 films are slated to be screened, among them both classics and new, as yet unrecognized masterpieces of Russian and foreign filmmaking. Audiences will also see retrospectives of war films and selections of documentaries and animation on the subject of war.

CHAMELEON

Director: Krisztina GODA.

Gábor is an office cleaner. Wearing overalls and a baseball hat, he seems insignificant. Working on the night shift, Gábor rarely has any contact with his employers, yet he learns everything about them by thoroughly analyzing their garbage. Since he is almost invisible, nobody suspects that Gábor is, in fact, a con man who carefully chooses his victims by the trash they leave behind. His targets are mostly disillusioned, lonely women. In a few months he destroys all their romantic illusions by taking all their savings. Having an unusually high IQ and an ability to assume various personalities, Gábor is an expert in manipulation. When he gets a job at a psychologist's office, Gábor meets Hanna, an injured dancer who happens to be the daughter of a millionaire. Insecure and vulnerable, Hanna seems to be the perfect victim. Gábor pretends to be a doctor who can cure her body and her soul, an irresistible offer for a desperate woman. Everything goes according to plan until Gábor falls in love with Hanna and has to make a hard decision between her and the money.

WATCH DOCS. Human Rights in Film IFF

International Film Festival WATCH DOCS. Human Rights in Film concentrates on showing human rights oriented documentaries which combine important message with the cinematic quality. Besides competition section where films compete for a WATCH DOCS award (around 20 titles), each year there are three permanent programme sections - "New Polish Films", "Discrete Charm of Propaganda" and "Close up" (in 2009 devoted to the post-soviet universe). The festival programme is complemented by various thematic retrospectives dealing with social and / or historical phenomena as terror or dictatorships, retrospective of the laureate of Marek Nowicki Prize awarded by Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, special screenings and many more. Festival is rich with accompanying events – discussions, panel debates, Q & A sessions with the filmmakers, workshops, meetings with experts, etc. Each year we invite more than 40 foreign guests – filmmakers, festival organizers, activists, etc. – who meet with the public and take part in industry events.

BOSCH: President Caught Between Empires

Director: Rene Fortunato.
The documentary presents the most important political and social events that occurred during the administration of the constitutional government with popular backing, headed by Juan Bosch, in the Dominican Republic, during the first seven months of the year 1963. The military coup d´etat that overthrew the Bosch government, the foreign policy of United States President John Kennedy, and relationship of the United States with members of the military who overthrew regimes throughout Latin America, are subjects that occupy a large part of this documentary, made entirely with original images and sounds from that era.

Border

Director: Eni Brandner.
Synopsis Granica, Grenze, Border - dividing line between two religions, two cultures - between majoritarian Serbian respectively Croatian areas. Twelve years after the end of the conflict about the 'Republic of Serbian Krajina' in the Yugoslavian/Croatian war (1991-1995), the traces of altercation are still present. Delapidated, destroyed houses - partly sitting right next to minefields, or in the middle of townscapes, waiting for their owners - act as unintentional memorials, warding off oblivion. The former inhabitants or their descendants/heirs return only slowly to the area rendered improvident by the Yugoslavian war. What persists are half abandoned villages and scarcely inhabited cities in the hinterland, off the beaten track, which still haven't recovered from the times of war. Filmed in Zitnic, Drnis, Sibenik and Tepljuh (Croatia) in 2008, in locations around the area of the temporary border of the internationally not recognized 'Republic of Serbian Krajina'. After the 'Log Revolution' in August 1990 this area became one of the focal points in the Yugoslavian/Croatian war 1991-1995.

"From Mills River to Babylon and back... The Jimmy Massey Story"

user
Director: Joseph C. Stillman.
“From Mills River to Babylon and back… the Jimmy Massey Story,” chronicles the life of a former twelve-year career Marine who refused to continue killing in Iraq and examines the political, legal, moral, and human rights implications of the war. Massey co-founded the Iraq Veterans against the War organization and has spoken all across the U.S. and the world. The project was shot in fourteen different states during the past four years. The filmmaker will be on hand to discuss the challenges of the project. The documentary features the following individuals: Martin Sheen-Actor/Human rights activist, Ramsey Clark-former U.S. Attorney General, Dr. Doug Rokke-former U.S. Army depleted uranium expert, Cindy Sheehan-Mother/founder of the Gold Star Families, Congressman Dennis Kucinich-Ohio, Father Roy Bourgeois- founder of the School of the Americas Watch, Scott Ritter-former UNSCOM weapons inspector, Kelley Dougherty- Executive Director of the Iraq Veterans Against the War organization, Col. (Ret.) Ann Wright-former U.S. embassy diplomat in Afghanistan, Dr. Ed Tick- (PTSD) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder expert, Congresswoman Maxine Waters-Calif., Bev Hoffman, Jack Gilroy and numerous other human rights activists. The film shows Jimmy’s early life and the tragic death of his father, his decision to enlist in the marines due to economic conscript, illicit recruiting tactics that target single parent families by recruiters (Massey was a Marine recruiter), weapons of mass deception, depleted uranium use and its effects on soldiers and civilians, the administration’s rush to war and taking back our democracy are some of the topics which are discussed in the documentary. “Jimmy Massey has paid an incredible price to tell the truth about the real war in Iraq but he would do it again in a heartbeat,” according to Stillman. “I believe it’s particularly important for parents and young people especially, to understand the tactics military recruiters will use to fill their quotas at the expense of the youth in our community,” he said. “This project has opened my eyes to many of the facts that Jimmy has raised and the tragedy of an ongoing war that didn’t have to be fought.” Stillman has said. “I sadly learned, for instance, that the U.S. has dropped massive amounts of depleted uranium, used in ammunition and bombs, in Iraq and Afghanistan since the first Gulf War and that it is presently having disastrous effects on our returning military personnel and especially on the civilian populations in those countries”, he said.
