On Friday, 29 October, 7pm the 4th
Russian Film Festival opens at the Apollo West End in London, with the UK premiere of cult director Garry
Bardin's stop-motion animation, The Ugly Duckling. This
year the opening film is an unconventional choice -
a sparky and affecting animation with Orwellian
overtones which has met with great critical acclaim in Russia. This screening
is complimented by a retrospective of Bardin's work. Other highlights of the
main programme include Alexei Popogrebsky's gripping psychological
thriller"How I Ended Last Summer" and the touching and controversial
"One War."

This year's documentary programme
encapsulates the last decade in Russia, offering a window into the real Russia,
with screenings of the finest Russian documentaries of the decade. This
retrospective includes Vitaly Mansky's Broadway. The Black Sea, a
representation of the world en miniature in this knocked-together summer camp
and The Revolution That Wasn't, Alyona Polunina's disturbing study of
the ‘Other Russia' movement. This definitive selection of contemporary Russian
documentaries is presented by the great director and documentary maker, Vitaly
Mansky, president of Russia's ArtDocFest. 

In addition to the feature length Ugly
Duckling and Belka and Strelka, the Russian Film Festival is showing
a comprehensive and diverse programme of animation ready to enchant adults and
children alike with its charm and imagination. The festival is proud to include
Irina Evteeva's latest film, the captivating Little Tragedies, based on
Alexander Pushkin's verses, together with several of her previous films,
including Petersburg and Faust. The is festival is also delighted
to include a retrospective of Garry Bardin's best work, including Adagio and
The Banquet. As well as these three films, we also will be screening a
special programme for our young audiences, presenting the best of award-winning
Russian animated films of recent years.

We
are delighted that Russian film directors and actors will be joining us for
Q&As and to introduce their films. Among them are Svetlana Proskurina, Vera
Glagoleva, Irina Evteeva, Vitaly Mansky and Andrey Plakhov.
