The 2004 Los Angeles Film Festival includes:
• New films from Jean-Jacques Annaud, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, Mike Hodges, Patrice Leconte, Richard Linklater, Guy Maddin, Tsai Ming-liang, and Zhang Yimou;
• Coffee Talks with Anne V. Coates, Danny Elfman, Thomas Newman, Alexander Payne, and David O. Russell, among others;
• A sing-along of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine in the Festival Courtyard;
• An under-the-stars presentation of Zhang Yimou’s Hero at the Ford Amphitheatre;
• An Opening Night Gala screening of Garden State, directed by and starring Zach Braff, with Natalie Portman;
• A blaxploitation evening moderated by Elvis Mitchell;
• An outdoor screening of Krush Groove, preceded by an onstage poetry jam;
• A discussion with master cinematographer Allen Daviau, including an in-depth study of reels from E.T., Empire of the Sun, and Van Helsing;
• The North American Premiere of Z Channel, a revealing documentary about the legendary cable station, directed by Xan Cassavetes, featuring interviews with Quentin Tarantino, Robert Altman, and Jim Jarmusch;
• A Poolside Chat on modern horror with Joe Dante, Tobe Hooper, Eli Roth, Guillermo del Toro;
• 195 films, including 83 features, representing more than 30 countries.
