21st Mar del Plata International Film Festival
9–19 March, 2006
The overwhelming quantity of films touring the equally overwhelming amount of film festivals has created a strong audiovisual flood whose current can sometimes make it very difficult for us to focus. Many argue -and they are not far from the reality- that international film festivals have become an alternative screening circuit for films produced out of Hollywood, that is to say, for films from the rest of the world. Where Hollywood tends to unify it all under a homogeneous look, film festivals try to show in their programs the rich and wide cultural tapestry formed by the immense diversity of visions of filmmakers from all the corners of the planet.
But gathering the greatest geographic representation and a large number of films is not enough. It is mainly through the program design that a festival can lead audiences -both the expert and the layman- to look through that labyrinth of images and sounds so that they can find, in some cases, expressions that match their interests, and in other cases, take the risk to explore different aesthetics dealing with non-conventional issues in non-conventional forms.
This 21st edition of the Mar del Plata Film Festival proposes to audiences a new program criteria. A broad and multidirectional approach that would lead audiences along particular paths, paths that do not exclude meditation and sheer enjoyment.
