Overview of the US business for the week of January 11th

Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 1984 led all films at the box office this weekend, having taken the top spot in all three weeks since its Christmas debut.  The widely-anticipated sequel to the 2017 original starring Gal Gadot earned $3M this weekend, and has earned $32.6M to-date from ticket sales in North American theatres.  Universal's The Croods: A New Age continues to impress with $1.8M in its 7th week, now having generated $36.9M over its run.

Our Industry News Summary includes an analysis from The Observer on the returns for Warner Bros. from Wonder Woman 1984, both in theatres as well as in net additions to the HBO Max subscriber base.  We look at several takes on how the emergence of streaming is changing strategies for film releasing.  At the same time, industry watchers are beginning to show some optimism about a coming rebound for exhibitors, who will benefit from the enormous pent up demand from consumers to experience entertainment outside the home.

In the Hollywood Report, Martin Grove runs down the upcoming movie releases that studios have teed up for theatres, beginning in late February and lasting throughout the year.  At last, it appears that Hollywood is planning for and contributing to the coming theatrical rebound.  Gower Street reports on December's box office results, which were strong in markets where the coronavirus has been tamed - China and Japan - and dismal in the North American and European markets, which are still struggling to contain the virus and keep theatres open.
