The latest offering from highly respected German independent filmmaker Percy Adlon, a glossy, heady, off-beat biopic about the famous turn of the century Viennese composer Gustav Mahler, his tumultuous affair and stormy marriage with Alma Schindler, a woman twenty years younger, and his presumed (but undoubtedly fictitious) couch sessions with Sigmund Freud to sort out his emotional problems, was definitely the class film of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Wow, What A Musical Lineup

user
THE WRECKING CREW, the music documentary that opened the Connecticut Film Festival at the historic Palace Theater in Danbury last evening, was a musical wow. Telling the story of the studio session musicians who backed up some of the recording industry's biggest stars, the film was an eye-opening look at an era when popular musical acts did not necessarily play musical instruments, and these professional back up musicians were not acknowledged. The documentary, a 12 year labor of ...

Meet Filmmaker Denny Tedesco

user
Denny Tedesco decided to make his film debut THE WRECKING CREW about a subject close to his heart. His father had been a studio musician who played backup for some of the reigning giants of the recording industry. But as the son of a musician who stayed in the shadows for his career, Tedesco was also aware of the difficult choices and somewhat unfulfilled lives these people endured. So, his choice for his directorial debut seems inspired...a tribute to the unsung musicians who play ...

COMING BACK FOR MORE

Director: WILLEM ALKEMA.
Coming Back For More Netherlands : 1 hr 14 min Willem Alkema Sly Stone is one of the great musical innovators of the last 50 years. With his band the Family Stone he was one of the highlights of the Woodstock Festival. Jimi, Jim and Janis died and became legends. Sly survived his drug addiction but disappeared in the early 80’s from the limelight. He became untraceable for years. Filmmakers, musicians (Prince) and friends had tried to contact him, without success. TV stations had offered thousands of dollars, in the hope of an interview, but Sly was not to be tempted. In 2002, director/musician Willem Alkema started searching for Sly Stone. Two years later, he found Sly living in a house at the end of a dead end street on a hill just outside Los Angeles. Sly Stone didn't want to be found or filmed but Willem didn't give up and finally followed Sly in his first steps in 2007 on stage since the seventies. At that moment Sly didn't want to be interviewed and disappeared. Finally in June 2009 Sly gave his first filmed interview in more then 20 years.

2010 Connecticut Film Festival: Mapping North By Northeast

user
The 2010 Connecticut Film Festival, which launches on Tuesday in the historic city of Danbury, Connecticut about 50 miles north of New York City, could very well be given the moniker "North By Northeast". This is not a geographic description nor a play on words of a classic Hitchcock thriller. It is, in fact, a nod to the multi-media event known as South By Southwest (SXSW), which takes place in edgy Austin, Texas each February. The Connecticut Fi...

I must confess I cannot wait to see that film.!, What a smart choice and programming from Tribeca. I was in charge of the distribution in France, and ran all the pro...

Rock'n'roll... Of Corse!

Director: Lionel Guedj & Stephane Bebert.
Some people’s fates deserved t be known by everyone. Henry Padovani, this Young 24-year old corsican, who arrivedin London in December 1976, is one of them. Actor and witness of a period when the alternative and revolutionary trend, the punk movement, arose, this self-taught guitar player went through the 80’s like a météorite falling from nowhere. From The Police he founded with Stewart Copeland in January 77, until his réunion on stage thirty yearslater in front of 80,000 people, from The Clash to the Sex Pistols, from The Who to The Pretenders, from REM he signedup to Zucchero whom he manages, with everyone, Henry shared a little bit of their music and a lot of their lives. Going back to his London memories, camera in hand, a move guided by a series of improvised sequences, of interviews of some of thèse rock n roll heroes, and of those who were there, more anonymous but just as important, the story of an extraordinary man told in this film, faitfull to his drive for freedom and spontaneity. A man for whom Rock n Roll has always been synonymous of friendship and solidarity. A man who dedicated and keeps on dedicating his life to music, and Rock’n’roll…Of Corse !
