Louder than bombs, dir. Joachim Trier, US/ Norway 2015 - Cannes 2015 Competition
By Martin I. Petrov
How easy it is to forget the past if you’re reminded of it on every single step you make to design the future? Joachim Trier’s third film Louder than bombs, loud in emotions and precise in its storytelling, explores the consequences of forgiveness, betrayal, love and death.
Teaming up again with Eskil Vogt (Oslo, August 31, Blind) on the script, Trier ...

Anytime you have the prolific Roger Deakins on set and powerful performances on screen, it is hard not to have a good film. Dennis Villeneuve's new masterpiece Sicario is, however, better than good. This action packed gripping crime drama that features Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benecio Del Toro is exceptional across the board and potentially has some oscar nominations coming its way. It is really no wonder why the film got a reportedly seven minute standing ovation at its premiere...
Pixar Outdoes Itself With Inside Out Premiere
On Monday, May 18th, Cannes Film Festival celebrated Animation Day to show off the talents and logistics of all things animation. The premiere movie at the Grand Lumiere Theatre was Inside Out, Disney-Pixar's new film about all of these emotions we have in our head like joy, anger, fear, sadness and disgust. It travels into the mind of a young girl named Riley, and portrays each emotion as their own person. Anger naturally shoots fire out...
Can you name a single famous short film? If you can, it may take a while to get there. Short films have been and probably will always be unfortunately overshadowed by features but are a nice change of pace in the film industry. Here in Cannes, in the enormous market place lies a shorter queue of only about a dozen, waiting for their chance into the short film corner. Consisting of fifty separate computers and hundreds of titles, it is a quiet pleasant personal theatre to enjoy shorts f...

Cannes: SR Socially Relevant Film Festival New York launches 3rd edition and opens Early Bird submissions during the Cannes Film Festival 2015!
SR Socially Relevant (TM) Film Festival New York wrapped its 2nd annual edition after week-long screenings of 53 films from 33 countries and four industry panels in March. SR Film Festival honored Albert Maysles posthumously with the Lifetime of Inspiration Award while the festival’s special Justice and Peace Award went to Israeli Filmmaker Guy Davidi (Five Broken Cameras) for his film High Hopes featuring a soundtrack by Pink Floyd.
SR Socially Relevant (TM) Film Festival NY, now in its 3rd year, is a film festival that focuses on socially relevant human interest stories and raises awareness to social problems by offering positive solutions through the powerful medium of cinema. SR Socially Relevant (TM) Film Fest NY shines the spotlight on filmmakers who tell compelling, socially relevant narratives across a broad range of social issues without resorting to gratuitous violence and violent forms of movie making. The film categories include shorts, documentaries, narrative features as well as scripts in competition.
According to Festival Founding Artistic Director Nora Armani, “The festival is a movement for the promotion of socially relevant film content not just a week-long series of screenings. We strongly believe in the power of cinema for positive social change, and we work hard in rewarding filmmakers who chose to tell socially relevant stories.” In view of this the festival curates screenings throughout the year and secures an annual presence at the Cannes Marché Doc Corner with a selection of Docs from its slate.
After a successful and expanded 2nd edition in 2015 the SR team is now looking forward to organizing the 3rd edition that will take place in March 2016. In Cannes, the team is busy with meetings with potential sponsors, new partners, and is keen on inviting film offices of countries rich with Socially Relevant (TM) film content to become the focus of its 3rd edition. New submissions open Monday May 18. The discount code: CAN15 offers Early Bird entries a further discount.

I have never been to a movie before that has been booed by more than a few people. Although, I was not at the press screening, it was reported that much of the audience received Gus Van Sant's new film "Sea of Trees" with much disappointment. The film stars oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Arthur Brennan, who attempts to commit suicide in Japan's haunting forest.
Throughout the whole film, I thought to myself "why on earth would this get booed so drastically?&q...

‘Put your headphones on and wait for my sign. We need to press play at the same moment to be synchronised and dance.’ Two loners, each holding their own music player surrender to the melancholic sound only they can hear among the trees in a silent forest. Only a split second is enough for one to venture into Yiorgos Lanthimos’ nostalgic ode to solitude.
The loners, this is how we call them. Ordinary singles, in the not so distant future, ar...

The Film Festival is not all about the screenings and the stars, but also how the ambiance changes within the city of Cannes. The weather is warmer, the streets are more lively, and the events are bigger. With the festival in town, a new season starts for local clubs that open up such as the Gotha Club all the way down the croissette to Palm Beach. Exclusive and pricey, but it also boasts some of the biggest names in the biggest industry coming to their venue.
