Mabel Cheung: AAWMM Talk Back

By Maria Esteves – July 31, 2016

The Asian American Women Media Makers (AAWMM) Talk Back with multi-award winning Hong Kong director and screenwriter Mabel Cheung, moderated by co-founder S. Casper Wong, AAWMM, was held at the Museum of Chinese in New York (MOCA), Saturday, July 23, 12PM. Presented by AAIFF16, director Cheung discussed her early film career from Hong Kong to England to New York, her first trilogy works (The Illegal Immigrant, An Autumn's Tale, Eight Tales of Gold), her transition from personal to political theme films (The Soong Sisters) and her collaboration over the years with screenwriter, producer and director Alex Law (Cheung’s spouse).

Questions posed to director Cheung by moderator Wong included: “What drove you into this crazy business to want to get an MFA? Do you want to talk a little bit about the transition from increasingly personal films and you taking on more political themes in your work? How do you create your scripts, are you very methodical in creating these characters? You mentioned Alex Law, can you talk about your collaboration has been over the years?"
