NYFF51 Review: All Is Lost

By Maria Esteves – November 2, 2013

The 51st New York Film Festival (NYFF51) Presentation of ALL IS LOST, directed by J.C. Chandor was held at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center on Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 6:00PM. Industry executives, celebrity guests, festival members, cast and crew were in attendance.

Virginia Jean 22245 sailboat lost in the middle of the Indian Ocean and no help in sight, ALL IS LOST is a haunting action-drama film (viewer discretion is advised) about a one man (Robert Redford) quest for survival, to succumb the challenges of the vast debt deep sea and the hope of being found. Exhausted physically, psychologically and emotionally from having to endure whatever came from having no communication to terrifying sea storms to ships passing by and not being seen. When all the odds are against you, our man instinctively sends out an S.O.S. in hopes that someone gets his Message In A Bottle.

Filmed mostly in the Pacific Ocean near California and the Caribbean, the superb sound design with minimal dialogue and background music magnifies the experience allowing you to become completely absorbed with the character.
