The Tasveer South Asian Film Festival (TSAFF), the largest South Asian film festival in the United States, wrapped up its 2019 film festival on Sunday with the closing film and awards ceremony. The 2019 Festival showcased 22 feature films and 39 short films during its 11-day run this fall. Programming represented over 10 countries with over 35 filmmakers and guests in attendance. Of the films selected this year,  27 came from female directors and represented the LGBTQ+ community.

TSAFF is proud to announce the Archana Soy Audience Choice Award winners for Best Feature Film, Best Feature Documentary, and Best Short Film & Documentary.

  • Best Feature Film: Laal Kabootar, director Kamal Khan

  • Best Feature Documentary: Pariah Dog, director Jesse Alk

  • Best Short Film/Documentary: Dunkey Following European Dream, director Hassan Zaidi

Preceding the awards ceremony, Seattle audiences closed the 2019 film festival with a screening of Pakistani crime/thriller Laal Kabootar, directed by Kamal Khan.

“We were thrilled to present such a diverse range of films this year, while sharing with Seattle the outstanding talents of the South Asian community both locally and abroad,” said Rita Meher, TSAFF Executive Director. “This year was especially special to us as our work was acknowledged by Mayor Durkan.”

On September 26, 2019, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan proclaimed September 26, 2019 as Tasveer South Asian Film Festival Day. Additional highlights of this year/s festival included special guest Indian actress and activist Shabana Azmi attendance to accept the prestigious Tasveer Emerald Award, and the screening of The Price of Free, directed by Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi in attendance, as well as over 33 other local and international filmmakers.
