Berlinale Street Food returns

Dieter Kosslick visiting the Berlinale Street Food Market

Once more the 66th Berlinale wants to whet your appetite: also for good food. For the third year the Berlinale Street Food Market will provide festival visitors with a selection of slow food treats from around the world. The food trucks will again be set up on Joseph-von-Eichendorff-Gasse at the corner of Alte Potsdamer Straße - so to speak, at the heart of the festival.

“With ‘food on wheels’ in our ‘eatery alley’ at Potsdamer Platz, we will be offering freshly cooked, pesticide-free, seasonal dishes from the region as an alternative to the ‘blind alley’ created by industrial food production,” says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

In cooperation with Markthalle Neun and Slow Food Berlin, the Berlinale’s Culinary Cinema is organizing the Street Food Market with the city’s most popular food trucks. These include “Heisser Hobel” with its cheese spaetzle from the Allgäu, “Big Stuff Smoked BBQ” with its juicy pulled pork or “Café 9” with Sironi’s delicious Italian baked goods.

Markthalle Neun brought the international street food trend to the German capital: “Berlin is a place where cuisines from all over the world cross. A fact that is especially evident now, at this time of great migration,” states Nikolaus Driessen from Markthalle Neun.

In collaboration with the Berlin-based refugee initiative “Über den Tellerrand kochen”, Sardinian star chef Roberto Petza will be offering Mediterranean food from a truck. He already cooked with refugees at the Italian food festival Il Pranzo di Babele.

Since 2007, Culinary Cinema has been exploring the relationship between food, culture and politics. “The Berlinale is simply the place for cross-genre taste experiences,” comments Culinary Cinema’s curator Thomas Struck.
