The truth behind Molly’s Game
Aaron Sorkin has written quite a few biographical drama films over the past one decade: Steve Jobs, Moneyball, The Social Network. However, quite unlike other screenwriters, rather than paying attention to the fussy details, he’s always keen on the dramatic stories behind his subjects.
It’s a commonly known fact that Mark Zuckerberg was never fostering a bad-breakup grudge when he rose in popularity. However, that plot definitely made for an excellent final shot.
Regardless, Sorkin’s latest movie and his directorial debut Molly’s Game is believed to be very faithful to the actual life of the subject, Molly Bloom. Played by Jessica Chastain, Molly Bloom used to be a poker princess at one time when she ran two underground games attracting the biggest Hollywood stars, mobsters and athletes during the mid-2000s.
The screenplay of the movie has been heavily derived from Molly’s memoir of the same name. Jessica essays the role very beautifully and doesn’t cave in to superstars in the film.
However, these days you don’t need to travel to some physical location to play your loved casino table games. There are many options to play poker online, finding your favourite poker table is easy with the selection found at canadascasino.ca, a top leading casino review portal in Canada. Yes, these don't have the glamour of Sorkin's film but they are extremely convenient, easy to use and, so long as you only use safe and reliable websites and apps, you won't get into the kind of trouble that Molly spends the entire film trying to get out of.
Let’s now go over some of the truths behind the movie. Molly never had that dramatic skiing fallMolly’s Game opening scene shows a young Molly skiing over a twig while participating in an Olympic qualifying event. She tumbles down wildly from the mountain, sustaining a back injury that finishes her skiing career. The voice-over in the movie blames that twig for changing Molly’s life-path, transforming her from an athlete to a poker princess.
But all that never actually occurred in real life. Molly retired from skiing not because of an injury but after a personal coup, after she had won a bronze medal, finishing 3rd in the country, making it to the US ski team. Her dad was actually hard on herKevin Costner plays the role of her dad in the movie. Molly speaks very lovingly about her father in her book, but there’s no denying that he pushed his children beyond their limits. She wrote that nothing used to be recreational in their family and everything was a lesson to help them go beyond their limits, to become the best versions of themselves.
The start of her career was indeed as a waitress and an assistantShe meets her future boss after he almost bangs his car into her in LA. She had just quit as a waitress and he hires her there and then for a job at his restaurant. Later, he makes Bloom his assistant too.
However, this employer whom she calls Reardon Green in her book, wasn’t the most pleasant after all. The scene in the movie where he rejects a bag of bagels bought by her, yelling that they were poor people bagels, is something that happened for real. On the other hand, he was also the person who introduced Molly Bloom to the world of poker, at a bar named Viper room, which he co-owned. After he fired her, she made use of her own new contacts to start another game of her own. Here are some insights into the underground celeb poker world she used to run.
Other than these truths, Tobey Maguire and Ben Affleck did play Molly’s game, a mobster had indeed put a gun to her head and Charlie Jaffey wasn’t actually her lawyer! 29.04.2018 | Bruno's blog
