Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Top 10 casino scenes

Take a look at the key elements of a great film – drama, conflict and jeopardy – and it’s easy to see why casinos and gaming feature so prominently in many of our favourite movies. Here’s a round-up of ten of the most iconic scenes of all time – and maybe they’ll inspire you to enjoy an excellent online casino adventure of your own.

Casino Royale, 2006

In Daniel Craig’s first outing as Bond he takes on arch-villain Le Chiffre in a do or die game of poker. Despite being poisoned mid-game and only being resuscitated by a handy defibrillator in his car, Bond goes on to win with a straight flush.

Oceans 11, 2001

Oceans 11 has an all-star cast headed by George Clooney with Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia and Brad Pitt. At the end of the film, following a multi-million dollar heist from the Bellagio we see the cast reflecting on their victory with the casino’s spectacular fountains as a backdrop.

Rounders, 1998

Matt Damon pops up again in Rounders alongside Edward Norton, a friend who is deeply in debt. It’s Damon’s ambition to play in the World Series of Poker but before he can he needs win money to help off these debts which he does in one of the tensest games of No Limit Texas Hold’em ever filmed.

21, 2008

Blackjack’s the game in this casino/heist drama starring Kevin Spacey. It’s based on true events involving a group of mathematicians using their knowledge to win millions of dollars from Las Vegas casinos. In one memorable scene the tables are turned when Spacey himself is cheated by being given a bag he believes are casino chips but which are actually chocolate coins.

Casino, 1995

Following on from the mob-world of Goodfellas Martin Scorsese went on to make Casino featuring many of the same cast including Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci. Against a typical voiceover by De Niro the character talks about the money that’s being made as the viewer wonder at the sheer quantities of notes and coins on show.
