3D Boom in the MarcheLast year's Cannes Film Festival marked the first time a 3D film, Disney's "Up," had premiered as the Ouverture. Since then, 3D has become all the rage at the festival, with many booths advertising 3D films for production, distribution and sale. As stated in "Cannes Market News," there are sixty-five 3D films being presented in the Marche du Film this year by companies such as Nu Image, CJ Entertainment, Illusion Studios and Celsius Entertainment, to name only a few. In addition, there are six 3D films screening at the festival. They include: "Amphibious," "Ana," "Boogie," "Garo Red Requiem," "Holy Night!" and "Space Dog's." The consensus in the market place is that 3D is the future. Representatives from CJ Entertainment report that they are receiving a lot of interest regarding the presales for two of their 3D features, a dinosaur film called "Tarbosaurus" and an animated TV series, "Bolts and Blip." In countries like Spain and China, 3D screen productions are increasing rapidly. Several companies even have plans to convert some of their 2D movies into 3D; however there are still concerns in regards to the 3D boom. Two main concerns, according to "The Hollywood Reporter: The Daily Cannes," are financing and limited room for distribution. In terms of financing, it takes a lot more time, money and resources to turn out a movie in 3D. Also, with the increase in 3D films, there are currently not enough theaters that are capable of showing them. For example, the length of time "Avatar" remained in theaters prevented jury president Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" from screening as planned in some areas due to limited 3D theaters. However, with the rapid 3D screen production occurring, this should remain a temporary problem. When speaking to representatives from production and distribution companies in this year's Marche du Film, one should expect to see even more thriller, animated, and action films in 3D next year.
