Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Mariam Arthur en route to Cannes day 3 part 2

I slept until around 9am. By 10am, I ventured out into the neighborhood. I took pictures of the lovely row houses. There was a street sign with the words "Humped Zebra Crossing." I looked at the house it was in front of thinking "Is this a joke." After a few more steps I understood - there is a pedestrian crossing over a wide speed bump with diagonal white stripes. Clever.

At the corner I discovered the free WIFI McDonalds. I ordered a small burger and a coffee.

I sat in a metro-designed chair and when my order was ready, they brought it to me. I checked my email, sent out "Day Three" and went on my merry way. Kentish Town is very old, (there is a story about the Crimean War) but as many areas do, it became trendy and a little artsy. I think I heard there is a university nearby.

So there is a variety of shops along the main road. I meandered through thrift shops looking for a new pair of jeans (didn't find any). I bought an Oyster Card (for public transit) and a T-Mobile SIM card for my phone. I found some postcards and headed to the post office. By way of walking and then the bus, I ended up at Camden Post Office, where I promptly purchased stamps and wrote short messages before dropping in the slot.

From there, I was walking to the Underground when I saw a punk rocker with the largest Mohawk ever - must have been 15 inches at least. Being me, I asked him if would mind posing for a photo with me, and grabbed the next person walking by to take the shot. Everyone was really nice.

I took the Underground to King's Cross Station. If you know anything about Harry Potter, you are aware that the special platform to Hogswort is located there. Knowing a good tourist opportunity when they see one, the station has now created a wall with the sign "Platform 8 3/4" which has a portion of a luggage trolley sticking out of the wall.

Next door to the station is the Eurostar. I went to the office and purchased my ticket for the following day to Paris.

Back on the Undergound, I went to Baker St. Another enterprising individual has renumbered their house to 221b, which is of course, the home of Sherlock Holmes. Close by is a Beatles store, because back in the day, Ringo and other musicians had homes in the area, and frequented the pubs, causing quite a nightlife scene.

Across the street was a little cafe offering Fish & Chips and being in England, it was my duty to try them. I had to ask for extra tarter sauce, which made the fish go down easy, but I admit it was very flaky and had no tiny bones.

A short walk away was Madam Trousseau's (not sure I'm spelling that right - sorry), where I went to the mail box to drop off newly acquired postcards. By then it was 5pm, so I headed back to Kentish Town, arriving before my host and sneaking a short nap before dinner.

Tom Coulter came to Cambodia and stayed at Rory's Pub, which is where we met. He made the offer to the friends at Rory's that if we ever came to London, to give him a call because he would love to host us. Now, my mother would always tell me, "Mariam, people are just saying that to be nice, they don't really want you to stay with them." But as she knows so well, I tend to take people at their word.

Around 7:30pm, we headed to Annie's - a newly decorated club in French "Louis XIV" style (is that the right number?). After a glass of wine, we walked over to The Oxford and enjoyed one of the best steaks ever! I got to bed after midnight - after my first day in London!
