NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2013 in Cannes

German Films

All good things come in threes: after two successful editions, German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA) are continuing the cooperation they initiated in 2011 and will be jointly presenting the short film program NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER for the third time this year during the film festival in Cannes. The international professional audience consequently gets an opportunity to discover both the NEXT GENERATION films of the German film academies as well as the five winners of the SHORT TIGER 2013 prize.

Thirteen shorts were selected for NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2013 from the film academies' submissions by an expert jury consisting of the director Jan Ole Gerster (OH BOY), Alexandra Gramatke (ShortFilmAgency Hamburg) and Dr. Gregory Theile (Kinopolis/Theile Group). Films in the selection had already been shown at such renowned film festivals as Sundance, Locarno or at the Berlinale. The five SHORT TIGER 2013 winning films are part of this programme.

The following films are being shown:

  • 6 VS. 6 (6 GEGEN 6) by Pius Neumaier  (University for Television & Film, Munich)
  • EAT by Moritz Krämer (German Film and Television Academy Berlin)
  • ECHO by Merlin Flügel (Offenbach University for Art and Design, Short Tiger)
  • ENDLESS DAY by Anna Frances Ewert (University for Television & Film, Munich)
  • BREAKING THROUGH (FLUCHT NACH VORN) by Florian Dietrich (German Film and Television Academy Berlin)
  • FORTUNE FADED by Alexander Heringer (Stuttgart Media University (HdM), Short Tiger)
  • THE STRANGE PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE SOLITUDE (DER FREMDE FOTOGRAF UND DIE EINSAMKEIT) by Willy Hans and Jan Eichberg (University of Fine Arts Hamburg, Short Tiger)
  • HOUSE by Ahmad Saleh (Academy for Arts Bremen, Short Tiger)
  • REVERIE by Valentin Gagarin, Shujun Wong and Robert Wincierz (University of Fine Arts Hamburg)
  • STEFFI LIKES THIS (STEFFI GEFÄLLT DAS ) by Philipp Scholz (The Fu King Production, Short Tiger)
  • TRAPPED by Alexander Dietrich and Johannes Flick (Film Academy Baden-Württemberg)
  • ROUGH GROUNDS (ÜBER RAUHEM GRUND) by Youdid Kahveci (German Film & Television Academy Berlin)
  • WAREHOUSE by Jakob Weiss (Academy for Media Arts Cologne).

The premiere screening of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2013 will take place on Sunday, 19 May, at 20:00 in the Star Kino in Cannes. The film-makers will be introducing their films in person on the invitation of German Films and the FFA. Afterwards, the programme will be shown at international festivals and as part of the Festivals of German Films which are organised by German Films in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Paris and Moscow.

In total, there were 59 submissions from 19 film schools looking to be selected, and they were not allowed to be longer than 15 minutes and had to be made by students of a German film academy in 2012/2013. A further 74 films made independently of academies were entered for the SHORT TIGER. This was open to short films suitable for screening in cinemas and being under five minutes.

NEXT GENERATION was initiated in 1997 to present new young talents from German film academies on an international platform. The SHORT TIGER has been awarded by the FFA since 2000. This year saw another extremely successful ceremony at the HDF Exhibitors' Conference KINO in Baden-Baden for a third time. The joint initiative NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER aims to contribute to those efforts wishing to give the short film  its deserved place on the cinema screen and in the consciousness of German and international audiences as an independent form of art and entertainment.

German Films and the FFA thank the supporters of the 2013 edition of NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER, arvato Entertainment and pro omnia, as well as the cooperation partners AG Kurzfilm, Forum Film and HDF.
