Sea of Trees Opens In Cannes

Off to a rocky start, Sea of Trees had its premiere last night at the Grand Lumiere Theater. It was the first film this year booed by a section of the audience during the press screenings the night before. Some had said that it was too pushed and the emotion did not feel real. Scott Foundas from Variety stated that the movie was "Dimestore mysticism of a highly maudlin and unpleasant order, passionately and deservedly booed." During the red carpet event with the cast and crew, there was no booing or ill-will in the theater.

After having seen the movie myself, I would have to disagree. I thought it was a moving film about survival both physically and mentally when hope is scarce. I thought the film was relatable, with the dialogue being things you would hear in everyday life. Not overly done but just enough that you feel you can connect to the people on the screen. The shots were beautifully done and the scenery added to the overall intruiging cinematography. I encourage others to see the film without bias. Matthew McConaughey's performance could be seen as overdone by some, but I thought he was able to deliver raw emotion in a way that translated through the screen to the viewers. Sea of Trees could go either way at the box office depending on whether viewers can enter it without judgement.
