HP celebrates 70 years in entertainment at Cannes Film Festival with special showcase events
From Fantasia to The Croods, HP will celebrate more than 70 years of innovation in entertainment at this year’s Cannes Film Festival by hosting various events showcasing the role of HP technology in the creation of film and in the way consumers enjoy and engage with film and music. As part of HP’s collaboration with Universal Music Group, the world’s leading music company, HP will host an intimate performance by the band Puggy. It follows other successful HP Connected Music gigs held in Europe with No Doubt, Ellie Goulding and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
HP, whose partnership with the iconic festival continues into its ninth year, not only provides critical technology infrastructure for the Festival, but also to a host of independent filmmakers and major Hollywood studios.
HP’s association with film began in 1939 in David Packard’s garage, where he and Bill Hewlett created HP’s first product, an audio oscillator that was later sold to Disney and played a key role in supplying sound effects for its seminal work, Fantasia.
Throughout this year’s Festival HP will be hosting workshops in the HP Lounge at the Hôtel Majestic Barriere to demonstrate the intricate role that its technology plays in the creation of entertainment. This will include an interactive workshop hosted by Jon Walton from independent, creative production company My Little Eye, which will focus on the Abbey Road Studios: In Session with VW Beetle series.
My Little Eye is an expert in cutting music content for TV and major labels, specialising in editing multicam music performances for high profile artists including Kings of Leon and David Bowie. From the role that HP’s workstations play in post-production to showcasing exclusive footage from Abbey Road Studios: In Session with VW Beetle, attendees will even have the unique opportunity to interpret and edit their own film clip.
In addition to the workshops, HP will also be co-hosting the highly exclusive Variety Studio between 17 –20 May, where they will showcase their latest consumer devices. Guests will also be able to have their photo taken at the HP photo experience area.
Additionally, HP will present the Variety Panel in the HP Lounge at 3:00 p.m. on May 18. The panel focus, ‘Technology and Animation: past, present and future’ is an area of expertise for HP and features panelists including Frank Mannion, CEO, Swipe Films; Michael Coldewey, CEO, Trixter; Tiziana Loschi, managing director, Annecy Film Festival; and Marc du Pontavice from Xilam, and will be chaired by Tim Gray, editor-in-chief of Variety.
Via HP’s partnership with Universal Music Group, the pop band Puggy, who released their third album, To Win the World, this year, will also be performing an exclusive live set at the Hôtel Majestic Barriere on May 22. The showcase will be streamed live on the Facebook page of HP France. The HP Connected Music platform is available on all Microsoft® Windows® 8 -powered HP consumer desktop and notebook PCs in EMEA, and brings music lovers a new way to enjoy some of the world’s most popular music artists.
HP will also host a number of live evening sets in the HP Lounge from renowned DJ Monsieur Komplex, who brings an eclectic mix of hip-hop, electro music and art-house rock.
“Ever since the patent for its first product was filed, HP’s desire to enable cinematic expression for filmmakers and to deliver new and meaningful ways for people to enjoy entertainment of all kinds, has remained unchanged,” said Jean-Pierre Le Calvez, vice president, marketing, Printing and Personal Systems Group, HP EMEA.
“HP is honoured to continue its support of the Cannes Film Festival, an event that has always celebrated the industry’s pioneers. And just as the Festival pays tribute to those that push the boundaries, HP, too, strives to find new ways of immersing people in performance.”
In addition, HP is working in partnership with Paulette Magazine, a publication dedicated to women which invites readers to write and submit their own entries to the magazine’s editors. They will be using HP digital printing technology to publish a special bi-daily La Gazette Paulette to keep festival –goers informed of the latest news on the Croisette. More than 6,000 copies of La Gazette Paulette will be distributed to festival visitors along the Croisette Boulevard. The four-page newspaper, printed in colour, will include festival news, beauty and make-up tutorials, as well as the latest ‘must sees’ of the Festival.
As well as HP Workstations, HP will also be showcasing its latest consumer devices in the HP Lounge. These include the HP Slate7, a sleek Android-based tablet with a 17.78cm (7-inch) diagonal screen and built-in Beats Audio; the HP ENVY x2, a powerful and ultrathin notebook that doubles as a tablet; and the HP SpectreXT TouchSmart Ultrabook, featuring Windows 8 and an intuitive touch experience on a 39.62cm (15.6-inch) diagonal Radiance Full HD display.
About HP HP creates new possibilities for technology to have a meaningful impact on people, businesses, governments and society. The world’s largest technology company, HP brings together a portfolio that spans printing, personal computing, software, services and IT infrastructure to solve customer problems.
