123 films from Europe will play in Toronto

European Film Promotion (EFP) with support from the European Union's MEDIA Programme, will be present for the tenth year at the Toronto International Film Festival (September 7 - 16) where a record number of 123 feature films and documentaries will be screened from twenty-three of EFP’s twenty-seven member countries. Among the films receiving World Premieres are six from France including Anne Fontaine’s Nouvelle chance and Jean-Marc Barr and Pascal Arnold’s One to Another, four from British directors including Shane Meadows’ This is England and Roger Michell’s Venus, and two from Denmark, Ole Christian Madsen’s Prague and The Art of Crying, a first feature by Peter Schønau Fog. Other World Premieres in Toronto include I Am The Other Woman by German director Margarethe von Trotta, Alex Warmerdam’s Waiter from The Netherlands, Nacho Cerdá’s The Abandoned from Spain, Finnish director Antti-Jussi Annila’s Jade Warrior, a coproduction with China, Estonia and The Netherlands, and the Italian documentary Primo Levi’s Journey by David Ferrario.

Eight European films will be presented as Galas: After the Wedding (Denmark) dir: Susanne Bier; Black Book (Netherlands/Germany/UK/Belgium) dir: Paul Verhoeven; Breaking and Entering (UK) dir: Anthony Minghella; My Best Friend (France) dir: Patrice Leconte; Penelope (UK) dir: Mark Palansky; Volver (Spain) dir: Pedro Almodóvar; and two Canadian co-productions, The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (Canada/Denmark) dir: Zacharias Kunuk, Norman Cohn; and The White Planet (Canada/France) dir: Thierry Piantanida, Thierry Ragobert, Jean Lemire.

Close to one hundred European directors and actors are scheduled to be in Toronto during the Festival to participate in discussions with the public following the presentation of their film and to meet with members of the international and Canadian press. Announced as of this date are:
