2024 Tucson Film Festival Opening, Centerpiece & Closing Night Films Announced
Arizona premieres of Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story, Max Dagan, and Between the Mountains and the Sky topline the festival’s 20th year.
The 20th annual Tucson Film Festival, formerly known as the Tucson Film & Music Festival, is set to take place from November 7-10, 2024, and today the festival announces its Opening, Centerpiece, and Closing Night films. In celebration of two decades of cinematic excellence, the festival lineup features a captivating rock music documentary, a compelling coming-of-age drama, and an intimate documentary about love and perseverance. These three anchor films are poised to captivate and charm audiences of all ages.
The festival kicks off with the Opening Night film, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story, directed by Andrew Reich (NBC's Friends). This documentary delves into the story of Redd Kross, one of the most influential West Coast bands of the past 50 years, and the complex relationship between brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald. Their groundbreaking contributions span genres from punk to indie rock, with interviews from members of Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and more. A Q&A with director Andrew Reich will follow the film’s Arizona premiere on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 PM at The Screening Room.
The Centerpiece film will feature the Arizona premiere of Max Dagan, written and directed by Terre Weisman. This poignant narrative follows Max Dagan, who, after his father is sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter, sets out to uncover the truth, all while armed with a vintage Fender guitar. The film stars Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure), Zachary Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), and Michael Madsen (Kill Bill Vol. 1). A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening on Saturday, November 9 at 7:30 PM at The Screening Room.
The festival concludes with the Closing Night film, Between the Mountains and the Sky, directed by Jeremy Power Regimbal. This inspiring documentary follows CNN Hero of the Year Maggie Doyne as she overcomes personal loss and dedicates herself to helping orphaned children in Nepal. Produced by Mark and Jay Duplass (Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Room 104), the film’s Arizona premiere will take place on Sunday, November 10 at 7:30 PM at The Screening Room. A special post show Q&A with subject Maggie Doyne and filmmaker to follow.
A full schedule of films, including 7 feature-length films and 22 short films, is now available on the festival’s newly launched website: tucsonfilmfestival.net.
