34th International Film Festival Rotterdam
January 26 - February 6, 2005
Forty-seven film projects have been selected for the 22nd CineMart, the first and largest co-production market worldwide, to be held January 30 - February 3, 2005 as part of the 34th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
CineMart director Ido Abram: 'The record number of 539 entries provided us with a good overview of the current, very lively market situation for small and medium budget films. The overall high quality of this 47-strong CineMart 2005 Selection and the expected presence of some 800 buyers and financiers makes Rotterdam the ideal industry platform at the beginning of the new year. As is our objective, this 2005 Selection not only introduces new talent but also welcomes back directors and producers familiar with 'the Rotterdam experience'. The CineMart, the Hubert Bals Fund, the VPRO Tiger Awards Competition and the other programme sections tie up wonderfully. CineMart 2005 has a strong line-up with strong projects about strong people in strong stories."
The CineMart 2005 Selection includes new film projects from high profile independent film-makers like Jia Zhangke (China, a.o. THE WORLD, UNKNOWN PLEASURES), John Sayles (USA, a.o. RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS 7, SILVER CITY), Sabiha Sumar (Pakistan, a.o. SILENT WATERS), Nicolas Roeg (UK, a.o. PERFORMANCE, DON'T LOOK NOW), Sandra Nettelbeck (Germany/USA, a.o. BELLA MARTHA), Kornél Mundruczó (Hungary, a.o. PLEASANT DAYS) and David MacKenzie (UK, a.o. YOUNG ADAM).
Furthermore, the CineMart 2005 Selection presents many projects from film-makers whose works were included in previous festival editions, who were supported by the IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund or who have been selected for previous editions of IFFR's Tiger Awards Competition: Fatmi Koçi (Albania, a.o. TIRANA YEAR ZERO), Mahamet Saleh Haroun (France/Chad, a.o. ABOUNA) and Teona Mitevska (Macedonia, a.o. HOW I KILLED A SAINT), Dom Rotheroe (UK, a.o. MY BROTHER TOM), Laurent Achard (France, a.o. PLUS QU'HIER, MOINS QUE DEMAIN) and Zhang Ming (China, a.o. WEEKEND PLOT).
The 2005 Rotterdam festival programme will include the following former CineMart projects will be screened amongst others: LA NIÑA SANTA (THE HOLY GIRL) by Lucrecia Martel (Argentina), NOBODY KNOWS by Kore-Eda Hirokazu (Japan), LOS MUERTOS (THE DEAD) by Lisandro Alonso (Argentina) and LE GARDIEN DES BUFFLES (BUFFALO BOY) by Minh Nguyen-Vo (Vietnam), INNOCENCE by Lucile Hadzihalilovic (France) and WILD SIDE by Sébastien Lifshitz (France).
In past years, CineMart presented later successful films like THE MAGDALENE SISTERS by Peter Mullan (UK), SPRINGTIME IN A SMALL TOWN by Tian Zhuangzhuang (China), FUSE by Pjer Zalica (Bosnia-Herzegovina), FATHER AND SON by Alexander Sokurov (Russia), 29 PALMS by Bruno Dumont (France), LOST EMBRACE by Daniel Burman and TROPICAL MALADY by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand).
CineMart works as a highly efficient catalyst and matchmaker in the film-making process. During IFFR, CineMart invites a select group of co-producers, television buyers, sales agents, distributors and fund representatives to meet up with projects' representatives. Year-round, CineMart continues to actively support the selected film projects through alliances and partnerships with other international film festivals, training organizations and funding bodies.
CineMart is supported by the European Commission's MEDIA Program, the Rotterdam Film Fund, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Dutch Film Fund and Dutch non-governmental development organization Hivos.
