6th Annual NYC Mental Health Film Festival6th Annual NYC Mental Health Film Festival SUNDAY April 25, 2010 Theme: Mental Health Recipients and the Arts NYAPRS is a statewide coalition of people who use, provide, and/or support recovery-oriented mental health services. We act to promote the concept and practice of mental health recovery, and the rights of people with psychiatric disabilities. As members of the New York CIty region we come together to advocate for a systemwide reorientation towards recovery and rehabilitation. We reach out to all communities to support us in our recovery focused movement.
COMMUNITY ACCESS has been a pioneer in providing innovative housing, on-site support services, and employment opportunities for adults with psychiatric disabilities for 36 years. We also remain focused on empowering the mental health community through advocacy and community involvement. Films to be shown: Noon: "Lens and Pens: Art in an Unexpected Place", shows how those in a mental hospital change their perspectives on life due to an art program. Funded by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
12:30 In "To See What I See", mental health recipients tell the story of their recovery to help fight stigma. One man travels the road of recovery from an attempted suicide through photography of each stage of his life.
1:00 pm The Coalition of the Institutionalized Aged and Disabled(CIAD) will show 2 of their short films on the conditions of adult homes. CIAD has a media team made up of mental health recipients living in adult homes. Their media team is a testament to how the arts can play a major role in the recovery of mental health recipients.
3:30 pm In "Canvas", an out mental health recipient in life, Joe Pantoliano, stars as the husband and father of a family torn apart by the mental illness of his character's wife. Each character finds their inner strengths and they come together again as a family.
