A taste of Aspen goodies

Incredible autumn viewing awaits movie lovers - both indoors as the 29th edition of Aspen Filmfest raises its curtain, and outdoors as Mother Nature unveils her fall colors.

One of Colorado's premiere film festivals, Aspen Filmfest runs Sept. 26-30, showcasing some of this year's most anticipated national and international features and documentaries, as well as undiscovered gems. As always, filmmakers and attendees enjoy mingling in Aspen's spectacular Rocky Mountain setting.

A new version of "Sleuth" directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Michael Caine and Jude Law is scheduled to have one of its first U.S. screenings in Aspen.

Aspen's own will be represented when a trio of Aspen filmmakers, actress Judith Light, co-producer Herb Hamsher and writer Robert Desiderio deliver a special presentation of their Sundance hit, "Save Me."

Also in attendance with a preview of a brand new work will be Emmy Award-winning wildlife documentary filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, known for their work with National Geographic.

Aspen Film's executive director Laura Thielen and her team are busily crafting
a cinematic adventure for this year's festival.

"Every year we strive to capture and distill the vast movie landscape into a succinct program that will entertain and enthrall," Thielen says. "This edition of Aspen Filmfest puts the emphasis on discovering the original in filmmaking - offering a diverse range of cinematic treasures for all ages and interests."

A festival highlight is the presentation of the Independent by Nature Award, given each year to a deserving film artist. Past recipients include Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas, Rob Reiner, and Anjelica Huston. Announcement of this year's honoree is forthcoming.

Aspen Filmfest was one of the very first to feature "The Queen" in 2006, screening the film in its debut weekend. Past festivals provided some of the first opportunities to view films such as The Dixie Chicks' documentary, "Shut Up and Sing" and to see Aspen native, actress Felicity Huffman "Transamerica".

Aspen Filmfest's full program is scheduled for release immediately following Labor Day. Tickets go on sale Sept. 17 through the Wheeler Box Office, www.wheeleroperahouse.com or (970) 920-5770. For more festival information, visit www.aspenfilm.org
