African-American Film Marketplace Highlights

The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center’s (“BHERC”) 14th Annual African-American Film Marketplace and S.E. Manly Short Film Showcase launches October 18, 2007 through October 21, 2007 at Raleigh Studios, 650 Bronson Avenue, Hollywood, CA. For the past 13 years, BHERC has honored individuals who have made outstanding contributions in entertainment and has also screened thousands of films by African American Filmmakers.
The BHERC is proud to announce that our opening program will be hosted by Award-winning Filmmaker JULIE DASH and our theme is Celebration of Sisterhood ~ Honoring Black Women Directors. The four day film Marketplace and Showcase will also feature a vendor fair, films, and seminars by black women directors focusing on “Sisters on the Set”.
• Spectacular Celebrity Opening & Closing Night Galas
• Film Screenings (shorts and documentaries)
• Ceremony Celebrating Black Female Directors
• Introduction of Filmmakers and their art
• “Sisters On The Set” Panel Discussions
• Filmmaking Clinic, Industry panels Guest Speakers, Vendor Booths, Casting Your Film Boot Camp, and Writing Workshops
• Industry networking receptions and parties

The BHERC will showcase short films and digital projects made by emerging African American Filmmakers from across the country. A list of the filmmakers will be released soon. The Marketplace and Film Showcase is held annually to celebrate the cutting edge work of independent African American filmmakers, to offer networking opportunities for filmmakers and Hollywood film and TV industry professionals, and to preserve and foster the important role that Blacks have played and are playing in film and television.

In addition to the screenings there will also be daily panel discussions, Director’s or Directing, Writers on Writing, parties and special events.
Founded in 1996 by Sandra Evers-Manly, the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center is a nonprofit, public benefit organization designed to advocate, educate, research, develop, and preserve the history and future of Blacks in film and television.

Since its inception in 1996, BHERC has screened over 3000 films including 2,221 shorts, 255 documentaries, 223 student films, and 622 animated films, from all across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the Caribbean. It has held 30 world premieres, 129 U.S. premieres, 344 West Coast premieres and 331 Los Angeles premieres. Over 45,000 people have attended and enjoyed the diversity of black cinema through the festival by attending the annual festival screenings.
