Ambiance from New York International Independent Film and Video Festival

The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival has been attracting steady audiences and a few celebs at its City Cinemas Village East location. Audiences fought through the throngs of Borat fans in their relentless support of the indies. The theatre actually became so busy that a very low-key Naomi Watts almost went unnoticed downstairs in Theater 3, she happened to be one of several stars quietly drawn to the allure of the annual Festival. The event has always produced films that left a lasting impression on the independent circuit as well as the cinematic world at large.

Such memorable films include Heart to Heart, a touching documentary about a little girl with a failing heart. Doctors implant an experimental device into the young girl which is rarely allowed in the United States. This passionate film is directed by Brian Gordon and narrated by Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy).

A diverse selection of edgy shorts in theater 4 kept audiences very entertained. Notable offerings were The Samaritan, directed Kimball Carr and produced by Ethan Marten. This film's standout quality can best be described in Martens following quote concerning Star Circle Pictures. "We are shaking the very foundations of cinematic creativity, but story will always be king."

Guests were also impressed with Rebecca’s Window directed by John Paxton Jr. The film is set in Atlantic City and exposes the gambling & casino culture away from the glitz, glam and the facade of winning...The packed post- screening party at Amazon NYC was a perfect end to the night. Guests were treated to complimentary drinks, sushi and exotic fruits...

Sunday's activities started with a wonderfully insightful and realistic seminar on film distribution given by Stuart Alson, executive producer of NYIIFVF and President of ITN Distribution, Inc. Mr. Alson explained the complexities involved in the culture of major film markets such as Cannes and AFM and provided tips on how to negotiate a deal where the filmmaker can actually make a monetary profit.

Edgy comedian turned film producer Angelo Lizaro’s and director Dora Militaru's moving documentary Murder in America captivated audiences on Sunday. Scott Schiaffo of Clerks fame made an appearance at his latest movie Idiots Are Us directed by Michael P Russin.

Ron Polillo (Horshack, Welcome Back Kotter) looked very upbeat with other cast members from the movie The Guardians.

Acclaimed French director Michel Gondry (The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep) was also present for the screening of the dramatic feature Malamados by Pedro Ramirez.
