Calls for New Filmmaking and Acting Talent at the New York Film Academy

The New York Film Academy has been in operation for over 20 years, teaching a variety of creative fields at locations through the world

.

Although some subjects are best learned through years of textbook study, the art of filmmaking is not one of them. For a filmmaker or actor to truly master their craft, there’s no substitute for experiential learning. At the New York Film Academy, we pride ourselves on making sure student get as much hands-on experience as possible under the guiding hand of expert tutors.

Filmmaking

Many film schools rely on studying existing media in order to demonstrate shooting and editing techniques. At the NYFA, we place a professional-grade camera into students’ hands and send them out into the field to learn by doing.

All students will gain practical experience working with an industry-grade Panasonic DVX 100 digital camera, in addition to equipment that will help them become acquainted with all of the main shooting media. These include 16mm and 35mm film, High-Definition, Super 16mm and the RED Epic system. Once a shoot is complete, students will have access to a Macintosh-powered editing suite, complete with Final Cut Pro.

There are a variety of programs to suit individual learning goals, and as the NYFA operates all over the globe, these are offered throughout its network of campuses.

Trial and error, coupled with expert feedback and subsequent adjustment, is the main method through which we explore the nuances of media creation. In addition, our workshops are designed to embrace the myriad different personalities that walk through our campus doors and help them use it in their work.

The filmmaking degrees offered include:

Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking (Two-year accelerated degree)

Master of Arts in Film & Media Production (One-year accelerated degree)

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Program in Filmmaking (Three-year intensive degree)

Associate of Fine Art Degree (Stand-alone, one-year program. Nb. Not intended for transfer to a BFA degree)

While each of these programs are designed to cater to individual requirements, a number of things remain constant across them all – expert tuition, industry-standard equipment and a collaborative, positive environment. In addition, students graduating from any of our programs will not only have a polished set of master tapes to include in their portfolios, but they’ll be treated to a screening of their final films on campus to show off their fine work.

Acting Programs

We’re fortunate enough to have provided the foundation for scores of high-profile acting careers. One of the most recent success stories comes from the talented Camilla Luddington, who shot to A-List stardom following a string of great roles as well as her portrayal of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot game.

“I was in the first ever one year acting class at the New York Film Academy in 2003 and I am so thankful for the experience.” Camilla Luddington

As with filmmaking programs, we ensure students are immersed in all of the nuances of acting through a broad range of classes. In addition, NYFA acting programs are a great way to not only learn the intricacies of this great profession but also to network with like-minded individuals. Learning on campus is conducted in a friendly, team-based environment that sets acting students up for real word collaborations when working professionally.

As well as creating stars, we also host them; the New York Film Academy is frequently applauded for its caliber of lecturers and guest speakers; previous guests have included Oscar award winning director Richard Dreyfuss, golden globe nominee Kathleen Turner, and Academy Award winning actress Holly Hunter. And that’s just to name a few!

Join Us!

No matter what experience you’ve previously attained (or lack thereof), the NYFA acting and filmmaking programs are an exciting stepping stone to industry success. Every year we’re joined by students who come from all walks of life; it’d be a pleasure to count you among them.

The NYFA operates in a number of locations alongside its namesake city, including:
