Conference in Media Growth Sector Moved to September 2021

With Covid-19 cases resurging around the world, organisers have announced the postponement of one of Europe’s leading events on language transfer in audiovisual media.

The conference, ‘Languages & the Media,’ which is an important biennial get-together for the content localisation industry, was scheduled to take place in June. It was then postponed to December because of restrictions on international travel in the wake of the continuing Covid-19 crisis. Now, in spite of a surge in interest in the event because of the growth of demand for localisation services, such as subtitling and dubbing, the event has been forced to move into next year.

“We rescheduled the June conference in the hope that we could meet again in person safely this December,” says Silvia Surian, Programme Manager at Languages & the Media. “However, the resurgence of the pandemic over the last weeks made it clear that holding a physical event of such scale this year just isn’t possible.”

The renewed postponement was welcomed with support by the Languages & the Media community and numerous participants who had already registered for the event expressed their preference for a delayed in-person event rather than a virtual edition of the conference.

The conference and exhibition will now take place on September 20 – 22, 2021 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Berlin. However, there is a silver lining for disappointed conference-goers: the organisers will host a virtual roundtable on December 15, 2020 which will be free of charge for all registered delegates of the 2021 event.

“It may not be the same as meeting in person,” says Ms Surian. “But the online roundtable on December 15 will provide an opportunity for our community to convene, albeit briefly, and hear from experts about the current state of industry. And to look forward to better times when we can all meet again!”
