Cross-border cooperation: Producers on the move (go to Cannes)

19 PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE 2005 selected for
Cannes International Film Festival (11 – 22 May 2005)

Their first co-production “School’s Out” (directed by Miguel Martí) is already in the can: the producers Pandora Da Cunha Telles (Animatógrafo 2) from Portugal and Pedro Uriol (Morena Films) from Spain got talking at PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE 2004 in Cannes. A little bit later they had already settled on the basis for this joint project. European Film Promotion (EFP) launched the initiative PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE six years ago to support enterprising European producers with their international networking and to draw attention to the people behind the scene of any filmmaking effort, who are not only finance experts, but also creative thinkers and psychologists.

This year the EFP member organisations have selected 19 highly promising producers (10 women and nine men) from 19 different European countries as PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE. They will take part in this initiative, financially supported by the MEDIA Programme of the EU, from 13 to 16 May during the Festival de Cannes. Prerequisite for the selection of the producers was that they fulfilled one of the three criteria with regard to a film they have produced: it was either a box office hit in their own country, was sold to another country or presented at an international film festival.

With the programme PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE, EFP has meanwhile focused international attention on 100 producers since 2000 and in this way supported their cross-border cooperation. No less than seven of the eighteen PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE 2004 have turned the ideas they developed in Cannes into actual projects. Among them is Ralph Schwingel (Wüste Film, Germany). After talks with Jarkko Hentula (Talent House, Finland) Wüste Film is now planning to remake a football comedy developed by Talent House (FC Venus). Thomas Gammeltoft (Fine & Mellow Productions AS, Denmark) also made use of the contacts with his fellow colleagues from PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE 2004 and discussed a co-production with Charlotta Denward (Filmlance International, Sweden). Alongside the project with Pandora Da Cunha Telles (Animatógrafo 2, Portugal) mentioned above, Pedro Uriol (Morena Films, Spain) is also working closely with Lukas Hobi (Zodiac Pictures Ltd., Switzerland). Meanwhile they have developed the film “Swiss Boarding School” together. click here to read more

An intensive programme is awaiting the PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE 2005 in Cannes. At different events and forums, such as the EFP Co-Production Lunch with 100 producers from all over Europe and a “pitching session” moderated by Ido Abram (The Film Firm), the producers will have the opportunity to discuss their projects with European colleagues and see their work from an international point of view. Another important aspect of the programme in Cannes is promotion. The PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE will be introduced to the public and the film industry within the framework of a far-reaching PR campaign.

EFP will cooperate with the initiative Producers Network of the Marché du Film in Cannes again. Here the PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE will have further possibilities to extend their international network and make use of an extensive programme of consultation and information. On Monday, 16 May, the 19 producers will get to know the other participants of the Producers Network at one of the breakfasts organised by the Producers Network.
