Our planet is mostly ocean, yet we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about that liquid space that is home to 80 percent of the Earth's living creatures. At least, we did until now. For more than five years, the creative team behind the acclaimed BBC series The Blue Planet explored the world's oceans, descending as deep as 16,500 feet to film what Variety's Jonathan Holland describes as some of the oddest creatures ever seen without recourse to artificial stimulants. The late Jacques Cousteau used to say that when you enter the ocean, you enter the food chain, and not necessarily at the top. DEEP BLUE does have its moments of violence, as predator and prey find themselves on opposite sides of necessity. Yet the film's jaw-dropping, sumptuous visuals and a lush musical score composed by Academy Award-nominee George Fenton and performed by the Berlin Philharmonic make DEEP BLUE a family-friendly film for all but the very young; an epic journey that does for ocean dwellers, says Holland, what MICROCOSMOS did for for creepy crawlies and WINGED MIGRATION did for our feathered friends.

Hilary Duff, Heather Locklear and Chris Noth star in this perfect family film about a daughter determined to keep her mother from falling for one more “Mr. Wrong.” Duff (who also starred in director Rosman’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie and A Cinderella Story) plays Holly Hamilton, a nice, normal teenage girl who is ready to strangle her mother. The problem? Single-mom Jean (Heather Locklear of Spin City and LAX) keeps falling for guys who break her heart. When her meltdown happens — and it always does — Jean packs up the family and moves to another town.

This is not doing wonders for Holly’s social life, either. She tries to convince her mother she doesn’t need a man; she’s great the way she is. When that doesn’t work, Holly concocts the perfect plan: a secret admirer whose letters and gifts will boost Jean’s flagging self-esteem. And it is the perfect plan — until Jean decides she wants to meet her secret admirer, who is, alas, also imaginary. To protect her mother’s newfound happiness, Holly enlists her girlfriend’s handsome hunk of an uncle (Chris Noth, Sex and the City, Law and Order) to pretend he’s the man behind the anonymous letters and gifts. Holly’s increasingly desperate measures to keep the perfect plan alive almost mess things up when the real perfect man comes along.
