Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Emir Kusturica walks them up again

In Competition with "Life is a Miracle" Emir Kusturica makes another come back to Jacob's land. Let us cross some fingers that he will get similar luck with his latest film after his previous palms.

Life is a Miracle (Zivot Je Cudo) marks the return of Emir Kusturica in Cannes, one of the rare directors – along with Francis Ford Coppola, Bille August and Shohei Imamura – to have been bestowed two Palme d'Or awards: the first one in 1985 for When Father Was Away on Business and again 10 years later for Underground. In 1989, the Sarajevo-born filmmaker also won the Best Director Award for The Time of the Gypsies.

The zany yet poetic universe of Emir Kusturica is once again portrayed in this moving singular love story with the Balkan war as the backdrop. This is the second movie for which the director has co-composed the musical score with the No Smoking Orchestra. A donkey that blocks passage on the railroad tracks, bears that invade a home or a diva who goes down onto the soccer field during the match...Hectic comedy, political fable and Shakespearean drama, Life is a Miracle is a pulsating work in which anything seems possible.
