Few days left to catch Encounters

11th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival
2-19 July 2009, Nu Metro V&A Waterfront, www.encounters.co.za

Just four days are left before the 11th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival will draw to a close after a marathon run of 17 days in Cape Town.

Although the final count is not in yet, the festival has experienced multiple sold out screenings during stormy Cape Town weather. Full houses give an indication of audience’s preferences – a combination of award winning films, well known filmmakers, and celebrity ‘subjects’.

So far, the festival has enjoyed sold out screenings for animated Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman (Israel), music-based Fokofpolisiekar by Bryan Little (SA), Francois Verster’s Sea Point Days (SA), controversial Defamation by festival guest Yoav Shamir (Israel), rugby-based The Invincibles by Mark Kaplan (SA), and Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the end of the world (US/ Canada) as well as Kentridge and Dumas in Conversation by Catherine Meyburg (SA).

Other festival darlings are Zola Maseko’s The Manuscripts of Timbuktu (SA), Who Killed Maggie by William Karel (France), Rip – A Remix Manifesto by Brett Gaylor (Canada), The Queen and I by Nahid Persson Sarvestani (Sweden) and Craig and Damon Forster’s Nature of Life (SA).

The French Embassy, Alliance Française Cape Town and Agence Française de Development have partnered with Encounters to present the screening of Home by celebrated photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Bertrand’s visually stunning film about the inter-connectedness of Earth’s diversity, biomes (and problems) is shot extensively from the air, and the film is a call to action.

It screens on Saturday 18th, 7.45pm, Cine 2.

Additional screenings scheduled are:
Sea Pont Days screens Sat 18 / 2.30pm, Cine 9
Fokofpolisiekar screens Fri 17 / 22.30pm, Cine 9 and Sun 19 / 22.30, Cine 9
