Holland Animation Film Festival highlights

CfH-HAFF Festival Fellow Paul Ward
Paul Ward is one of the leading scholars in the UK in the field of animation studies. He is currently Principal Lecturer in Animation at the Arts University College at Bournemouth and serves as the President of the international Society for Animation Studies [www.animationstudies.org].
On March 27th the symposium Animation: Magic and Matter was presented by the Centre for Humanities & the Department of Media & Culture Studies (Utrecht University). If you couldn’t make it, you can read a summary written by Birgitta Hosea here .
Today Paul Ward gives the Daily Master-lecture, titled
FANTASMIC!  and later on presents two film programmes called Magic & Materiality , which he compiled for the festival. Can’t make it today? Don’t worry, he will be back tomorrow to present the films one more time!

Meet the judges
The jury members of the competitions present their work. Films of renowned filmmakers and work by visual artists that are working in the world of animation. The mix of everything from personal films to a commercial shows the diversity of the jury and of animation as a medium. The first screening  is tomorrow at 18.45h in Louis Hartlooper Complex.

For films by the jury members Haiyang Wang (China) and Kei Oyama (Japan) please refer to the Winners programmes. As winners of the Dioraphte Grand Prix HAFF for shorts 2010 they were given carte blanche to put together their own programme. Kei Oyama’s choice  consist of Japanese films, Haiyang Wang’s choice is part of theme programme Independent China . He also brought some of his art work, which is exhibited in the cafe of Louis Hartlooper Compex.

Gregory Barsamian (USA) will give a lecture on Friday as part of the Daily Master programme . And there is an exhibition of artwork  of Igor Kovalyov in Louis Hartlooper Complex in Das Kabinett.

HAFFgames DAY
You can fill a day with animation and games, and that is exactly what HAFFgames DAY is. For a full day, we examine all the different forms of animation that game developers use. Where does this work out fine and where does it go wrong? Experienced animation directors cast critical eyes upon ‘that other medium’. And vice versa: Can animators learn anything from game developers? The HAFFgames DAY takes place tomorrow, more information can be found here .

This afternoon, animation filmmakers and producers who want to make a game out of their film, and game developers who have a game and want a animated film, can meet up at the pitch Gamemakers meet Animationmakers. Everybody can pitch in 90 seconds and afterwards there are drinks to talk with possible partners. Drinks made possible by MEDIA Desk Nederland. Dutch Game Garden, Neude 5, 17.00-18.30h.
