Hong Kong Actress Reflects on In the Mood for Love

Maggie Cheung Man-yuk was once famous for her coldness and pride towards
the media. Recently, she was highly praised for coming to Mainland
China to promote In
the Mood for Love
. Fanfan Ko caught up with this Asian beauty
after China's film awards.

Which one of your successful films impresses you the most?

Ruan
Ling-yu
(for which she won the Best Actress Award at Berlinale 1992).
It was shot at a difficult time for me and I love the character very much.

What do you think of your performance in In the Mood for Love?

Not
too good, but not bad. I should say that I could have done better. It
was difficult to perform as she was a sophisticated character, and the
director just gave us plenty of time.

You
have worked on many films with director Wong Kar-wai, whose films are
of a particular style. Do you ever fear being typecast for that style?

No. I choose every character on my own and have confidence of success
before shooting every movie. I don't worry about who the director is.
And I won't accept a character which I do not agree with.

You got your start in a beauty pageant (Maggie was runner-up of 1982's
Miss Hong Kong). What do you think of the relationship between your beauty
and your characters? Some of them are kind of Jolie-laide.

To my experience, my characters as Jolie-laide are easier to perform well
... It's extremely difficult to perform as a real beauty.

It
has been said that you are about to go to Hollywood, being one of the
most famous Asian movie stars, do you wish to break into Hollywood?

No,
I do not intend to do so.

Who has influenced you the most in your acting career?

Definitely
Wong Kar-wai.
