Jeremy Stein's Biography and Filmography


Before he turned to film directing, Jeremy Stein worked in the Theater area, in Lighting Design.

Regionally, Jeremy designed The Glass Menagerie at Baltimore’s Center Stage, Arms and the Man at the Dallas Theater Center, and America Play at the Yale Repertory Theater and Joseph Papp New York Public Theater (for which he received an American Theater Wing Award Nomination for Design). Some of his credits as an associate include: Snow on the Mesa danced by Martha Graham Dance Company, directed by Robert Wilson, performed in New York, Washington, and Paris; American Ballet Theater, performed at the Metropolitan Opera House, choreographed by James Kudelka and Twyla Tharp; Paul Taylor Dance Co., performed at the New York City Center. He was an Associate Artist for the Wooster Group’s 1996 production of The Hairy Ape starring Willem Dafoe. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama where he was the recipient of the 1993-94 Stanley R McCandless Scholarship.

In 1995 he began working as a Production Designer on an N.E.H funded documentary entitled Forever Free, America in the Era of Emancipation and Reconstruction . The film, directed by Charles Burnett ( Killer of Sheep, To Sleep with Anger , and Glass Shield ) was the pilot episode of what will be a five part, six hour P.B.S documentary.

He worked in the capacity of Co-Director on two separate segments of principal photography on location in South Carolina and
Georgia, multiple script revisions, and three segments of picture and sound editing. The film is scheduled to air in the fall of 2002.

He wrote and directed the feature film The Photographer
starring Reg Rogers, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rob Campbell, Chris Bauer, Tom Noonan, Mary Alice, Tom Noonan, Kristen Wilson, Marisa Berenson and John Heard. The film was shot in New York and produced by himself along with Peter O. Almond (Thirteen Days and Babysitters Club and Chris Moore (Good Will Hunting, Third Wheel, Reinder Games, American Pie, Best Laid Plans, Glory Daze.
