The Festival, now 12 years old, attracts large audiences to a full
programme of mostly non-American films and concentrates particularly
on the films nominated for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. There are
also ancillary events which include panels, discussions, and tributes
to distinguished film personlaities.

This year 34 Oscar-nominated foreign films are being shown and
an International Critics Jury organised by the Festival and FIPRESCI,
and chaired by Derek Malcolm, President of FIPRESCI, is judging
these productions. It is hoped to make this jury a permanent feature
of the Festival.

There are also career tributes to actors Sean Connery and Nicolas
Cage, and to cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno. Among the other guests
in attendance are Krzysztof Zanussi, Ed Harris and Liv
Ullman. An ancillary competition was mounted at which a number
of distinguished cinematographers were judged by their peers.

The Festival is largely staffed by enthusiastic volunteers and
suffered this year from the fact that several of their most experienced
staffers had resigned due to policy differences. But its friendly
and informal atmosphere remained - as did its value to a community
who would otherwise see very few of the European and Asian films
on display. Despite the fact that so much of Hollywood's history
is bound to its own productions, the area audiences are going to
the foreign fare in considerable numbers and with great enthusiasm.
