Popwhore a New American Dream to screen at NYIIFVF

Emmy-award winning filmmaker and retired New York City firefighter James Hanlon (9/11) today announced the New York premiere of his feature documentary film, POPWHORE - A New American Dream as part of this summer’s New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF). The film explores the profound and controversial choices a mother makes to support her family and will play at the prime time slot of 8pm on Saturday July 21st at City Cinemas Village East with an afterparty to follow. The film has already earned two award nominations.

POPWHORE – A New American Dream, examines the life of a young wife and mother with no money and options running low who decides to start a Porn Website starring herself in search of fame and fortune. She finances the endeavor by escorting for the rich and famous. The film follows San Francisco-based Tatum Reed AKA "POPWHORE" on a 12 month journey with her family pursuing the "American Dream." Along the way the film shows a 360' view of the current sexual fabric of America including interviews with members of the Christian Right, The ACLU, Sex Therapists and Adult Performers and intermingled with footage shot on location in San Francisco, New York City and the Adult Film Convention in LA. The film ends its final chapter with POPWHORE moving to Beverly Hills with her family seemingly on her way but at what cost?

“With “POPWHORE” we wanted to explore the human drama that comes from the very difficult choices an individual makes in their life and how these choices can shape the futures of everyone around them,” said James Hanlon, who also co-produced the film with Darren Capik, through their company Piklon Entertainment. Mr. Hanlon has also won a Peabody Award and the Edward R. Morrow Award for 9/11 which has been seen by over 100 million people.

“It’s a sensational story about the direction that the fabric of American sexuality is taking in major urban cities spurred by the internet and everyday individuals, usually well-to-do professionals all searching for some type of fulfillment that is lacking within their lives,” says producer Darren Capik.

The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival known for its high-quality documentary category will screen more than 40 diverse entries from around the world on topics such as AIDS, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana's disappearing coastline, the history of Heavy Metal, the story of the coffee cooperative in Uganda and a Human Rights documentary about Chernobyl to name a few.

According to festival founder and executive producer Stuart Alson “I am delighted that POPWHORE is part of our documentary selection. It is an interesting and professionally made and makes an impact. It possesses all the important components of a successful documentary including a strong story line, fascinating characters and interviews as well as raw footage thus giving audiences a very real sense of POPWHORE’s unusual life as a devoted wife, mother, entrepreneur and risk-taker. Stuart goes on to say “James Hanlon is an edgy filmmaker who is not afraid to tackle difficult or controversial subject matter. I am delighted that his film is part of our festival and expect it to do very well in terms of audiences, press and awards.”

Tickets are priced at $12 and can be purchased through nyfilmvideo. Tickets will also be available at City Cinemas Village East Box Office. Press and distributors can obtain a pass by faxing a request on company letterhead to 702 361 6309 (Attn. Nicole Holland). Your name will then be placed on the complimentary guest list at Box Office. The afterparty is by invitation only and will be handled by dynamic party-planner Annalisa San Juan.
