Texas Black Film Festival Winners

On Saturday February 7, 2009 at the Studio Movie Grill - Dallas, the Texas Black Film Festival presented awards to an impressive collection of films and filmmakers. Concluding three full days of screenings, workshops and community panels, the TBFF Awards Program reflected the spirit of social change sought to be achieved in these historic times.

The big winner of the evening was the short historical narrative filmed in Ghana, "The Warrior Queen," directed by Hezekiah Lewis of Apple Valley, California. Hezekiah Lewis is a professor of film at Villanova University, and a graduate of the UCLA Film School. Says TBFF Director David Small, "we are proud to be the first festival to screen this wonderful film." Warrior Queen won TBFF Best Overall Film and is scheduled to screen several times at the Pan-African Film Festival.

Other big winners of the festival include "The Least Among You," starring Louis Gossett, Jr. and "Gospel Hill," starring the ensemble cast of Angela Bassett, Danny Glover, Samuel L. Jackson, Nia Long and Julia Stiles. The Least Among You won Best Texas Film, Best Director of a Feature Film (Mark Young, Dallas Texas) and the Audience Choice Award. Gospel Hill took home the TBFF Award for Best Feature Film.

Margaret Galbraith of Brooklyn, NY received the TBFF Award for Best Documentary for her film, "Krumbs." This story depicts the journey of a near homeless African-American woman who finds strength through her skill of baking. The moderator of the Q&A session was constantly directed by the audience to find out more about the current status of the subject of the film. Krumbs certainly moved the TBFF audience.

"The Plastic Perils of the Pacific" directed by Brandon Strathmann won Best Animation. This ecological awareness piece proved to be an effective way to remind the audience that we should recycle when possible. Though it was light-hearted, the message resonated with adults as well as kids.

For those who were unable to attend the TBFF and the TBFF Awards program, we extend to you an early invitation for next year.
