The 16th Portobello Film Festival

The 16th Portobello Film
Festival runs from 1 to 18 September at the Pop Up Cinema and Westbourne
Studios, Acklam Road W10. All shows are free admission.
Highlights this year include the premiere of Ebony Road by 18 yr old filmmaker
Mya Krall Fry and John Tiberi’s Sex Pistols in Stockholm 1977 on the Opening
Night (1 Sept, Pop Up), JC Carrol from The Members’ Golborne Road Opera on 2
Sept at the Pop Up, and 6 days of dedicated London premieres from 6 – 11
September at the Pop Up including Ultimate Survivor about Oxford’s Penultimate
Picture Palace (7 Sept Pop Up), and Sahara Libre by The Plague director Greg
Hall (9 September Pop Up).
The second week at the Pop Up sees ever popular new Spanish films (13 Sept Pop
Up), Irish films (14 Sept) and Italian films (15 Sept Pop Up), with Virgin
Media Shorts screening their shortlist for this year’s prizes on 16 at the Pop
Up along with a film about Brazilian musical legend Tony Ze, In The Nursery
playing a live soundtrack to The Cabinet of Dr Caligari on 17 at Pop Up, with
the Grand Awards Ceremony at the Pop Up on 18 September.
Westbourne Studios plays host to the ever popular and lively Video Café where
films can be brought along on the night or chosen from a menu from 5 – 8
September, and the London Film Makers Convention the following weeks with talks
from successful low budget film makers Jes Benstock, Olivier Kaempler, and
Lincia Daniel on13 Sept, Latimer Films and ex Channel 4 Commissioning Editor
Alan Fountain on 14 September, and Nic Roeg collaborator Michael Woods (with
the possibility of an appearance by Nic Roeg) on 15 September.
The Festival also presents four nights of Caribbean films and talk at The
Tabernacle, Powis Square W11, from 14 – 17 September, featuring features The
First Rasta on the 14th September, and Rasta Mouse creator Michael De Souza and
Fire In Babylon director Steven Riley Masterclass on 16 September.
