The World's Northernmost Festival

Tromsø International Film Festival

January 16 - 21, 2001(Norway)

Tromsø
International Film Festival was established in 1991 and is Norway's
largest film festival for regular cinema-goers. More than 30,000
attended the festival screenings in 2000.

Tromsø is a small city with approximately 60,000 inhabitants. It
is situated far beyond the polar circle in the northern part of
Norway on the "Top of the World". Tromsø is internationally known
as "The Paris of the North". The Film Festival is arranged in January,
and the winter in northern Norway is dark and exotic, really a winter
wonderland.

Tromsø International Film Festival is the world's northernmost film
festival and it takes place just after the sun has returned to the
horizon, when it is still possible to experience the Northern Lights,
the "Aurora Borealis" in Tromsø. The Northern Light has given it's
name to our most important award, The Aurora. The winner of this
award is assured theatrical release in Norway, through financial
support to the Norwegian distributor and 25,000 NOK (about 3.500
euro) to the director. The Award is given by the Norwegian Film
Institute.

The festival presents an international cutting edge program consisting
of 40 - 50 feature films, with a focus on films that have not yet
achieved distribution in Norway, nor been screened at Norwegian
festivals. We are the only festival in Norway that has two international
jurys. FIPRESCI (Féderation Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique)
and FICC (Fédération Internationale des ciné-clubs) which awards
outstanding films with the Don Quijote prize.
