The Creators Series Launches In New York and LA

Wednesday, June 6------The Creators Series, a multidisciplinary salon-style conference dedicated to emerging creativity, launches in New York this coming weekend (June 8-10)  and then goes cross-country to present a series of programs and events in Los Angeles (June 14-17). The event is the first for recently founded curatorial enterprise Tomorrow Unlimited, a new venture between Tribeca Enterprises, the parent company of the Tribeca Film Festival and Tribeca Cinemas, and former principals of RES Media Group, publishers of RES Magazine and creators of the global film festival RESFEST. “We will give voice to the grassroots of emerging creative culture worldwide,” explained Karol Martesko-Fenster, CEO of Tomorrow Unlimited. “The extraordinary efforts of young talents working with new tools and techniques, new communication technologies, new concepts in multimedia creation, and perhaps most importantly, a renewed sense of hope for the promise of creative culture, offers an open door to our collective future.” The Creators Series highlights tomorrow’s ideas and cultural trends, exploring the worlds of film, media, design, illustration, fashion, advertising, and technology, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary creativity. The Series has been designed as the premier outlet for the convergence of international creative talent, and as a platform to support optimism and idealism in arts and culture. More than a dozen artists will participate, traveling from multiple cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brighton, London, Montreal, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Seattle, and Sheffield, England.

Among the highlights:

  • Creators of Tomorrow include Nieto, a French-Colombian artist and filmmaker; Gareth Pugh, a sculptural fashion designer who showed at Channel Four’s Fashion House and London Fashion Week; and Matt Pyke, founder of Universal Everything, a multidisciplinary virtual creative studio.
  • Performers of Tomorrow include Pop Levi, an English experimental musician whose hit single “Sugar Assault Me Now” recently aired on HBO’s Entourage, and Handsome Furs, a newly formed duo featuring members of Wolf Parade.
  • Sustaining Change creators include Jennifer Leonard, co-author of acclaimed Massive Change: The Future of Global Design, and Sarah Rich, Managing Editor of Worldchanging.com and co-editor/co-author of the recently released Worldchanging: A User’s Guide for the 21st Century.
  • The New Urban Interventionists include innovative graffiti artist Paul “Moose” Curtis, and Graffiti Research Lab, an arts collective housed within Eyebeam Atelier’s OpenLab.
  • Social Interfaces creators include Internet artist and storyteller Jonathan Harris; ReacTable, an interactive musical interface recently used by Björk in live shows; and interactive artist Theo Watson, who designed the exhibition for Michel Gondry’s Science of Sleep display last year at Deitch Projects.

In addition, film futurist Matt Hanson will discuss A Swarm of Angels, his “Cinema 2.0” attempt to collectively create and fund a feature film.Interactive filmmaker Martin Percy will present a body of work that includes The Digital Debate, an effort to create multi-author political documentaries; and multidisciplinary artist Chris Doyle will elucidate his latest undertaking, 50,000 Beds, a collective video art project exploring the intersection of labor and tourism in Connecticut hotel rooms through contributions from artists like Marina Zurkow, David Ellis, and Kevin and Jennifer McCoy. Along the way, the panelists will consider the pros and cons of non-hierarchical, collaborative filmmaking, and what this approach could mean for the future of the medium.

A showcase for the innovative work being presented throughout the Creators Series weekend will be presented at no charge at gallery exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. The exhibitions will showcase art, media, designs, installations, and other relevant work from each of the Creators Series participants. A number of informal demonstrations and chats will also take place in the gallery throughout the weekend, free of charge. In New York, the Gallery will be open June 9 and 10 at the Altman Building, 135 West 18 Street; in Los Angeles, on June 15-17 at the Rec Center, 1161 Logan Street.

Audiences will have a chance to get a special sneak preview of the weekend's events starting today in New York, at the Apple Store Soho from 8:00pm to 9:30pm. In Los Angeles, a special sneak preview will take place on June 13th at the Los Angeles Apple Store at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. For a complete schedule and ticket information for the Creators Series, visit the official website: www.thecreatorsseries.com.

The Creators Series is the first in a series of offerings from Tomorrow Unlimited aimed at providing new platforms to the global creative community. Later in 2007, the company will launch a daily editorial Website, followed by a New York-based event series and an international touring conference and festival. Exciting stuff.
