We Don't Need No Stinkin' Carpet! by Kimberly Deisler

With the whole of LA being awash with red carpets, I’m surprised Moses hasn’t shown up. And yes, the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival has a carpet, well … it’s actually a runner, and yes it’s red, and yes celebrities stand on it and get their pictures taken albeit a much more intimate setting than some of those other snobby assed carpeted events.

AND YES, I LIKE IT, MUCH, MUCH BETTER! There’s no security asshole the size of a building telling you you can’t talk to the ‘talent,’ let alone go near them. There’s no beef eating Mastadon surrounding the stars, there’s no “us vs. them,” it’s just “US.” The way it ought to be.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen the frenzy of stupidity up close and personal for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney and Angelina Jolie at such events, and yes, admittedly, hired muscle was needed to keep the insane at bay. But the comedy crowd is different, civilized even. Frankly, we’re a bunch of nerds, misfits if you will. Combine comedy with film and you’ve got some of the nerdiest, funniest, silliest, most intelligent, and creatively hilarious people collected in one place.

Now add karaoke! Picture it, celebrities like Cedric Yarborough, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, David Foley, Scott Thompson, Phil LaMar, Scott Lawrence, Rex Lee, Ashley & David Eckstein, Greg Pitts, Ahmed Best, etc., comedy nerd filmmakers + booze. Really?! REALLY??!! You need more information than that?

Well then, you should have joined us, because every party thrown at this festival is exciting, hilarious and a hell of a lot of fun!

One thing the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival knows how to do, is party like its 1999. Parties are jam packed with food, shit to do and enough booze to loosen up even the tightest tight ass to do it. (Oh and of course, someone is usually getting it all on camera. You know, for insurance purposes.) TMZ would have a field day if they really gave a shit about REAL entertainment, but I digress.

And that was just Opening Night! Last night was on fire as everyone hit the ESPN Zone and flexed a bi-cep curling shots to their pie, er, em, booze holes. As always, the powers that be at this festival have thought of everything and there’s a bus that carries your ass all over town from one spot to the next, so driving isn’t an issue or a hassle. In other words, “Drink Up.” You may have noticed, I’ve mentioned drinking once or twice, that’s because this year some of the sponsors smart enough to invest in shenanigans are Revel Stoke Spiced Whisky, Ventura Limoncello Company and Six Rivers Brewery. Of course, there’s also M Street Coffee to take the edge off the next morning.

But, back to the party. The place was hopping and I liken the scene to a film set. Jam funny, creative people into one room, combine games, competition and alcohol, shake, stir, whatever, need I say more?

The day is young so get off your ass! You can still make today’s shorts and later hang with celebrities at the parties tonight, and repeat it all again tomorrow! That’s the beauty of creative people their appetite for life is insatiable.
