Miami FF Focuses On Social IssuesTuesday, February 27-----While current social, economic and political issues are prominently featured throughout the Miami International Film Festival program (which is truly international in its scope and concerns), several special programs have been dedicated to the issues of immigration and its sometimes related cousin, homelessness. Among the most anticipated is what the Miami dubs its Big Picture program, which for the past several years have highlighted films that tackle world issues and the human struggle for life and dignity. Award-winning British director Nick Broomfield’s documentary meets fiction film GHOSTS, based on the shocking true story of a group of Chinese illegal immigrants who were drowned while picking cockles in a British seaside town, will serve as the centerpiece of this year’s topic, Modern Slavery. The program includes thought-provoking panel discussions; engaging filmmakers, international experts, with contributions welcomed from audience members. GHOSTS will have its East Coast Premiere on Saturday, March 3rd at 7:30pm at the newly refurbished Colony Theater. For more information on the film and to view a trailer, log on to: http://www.ghoststhemovie.co.uk.
Nick Broomfield is a master documentarian who began his career at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) in London. At NFTS, he met partner Joan Churchill, with whom he has collaborated on several films, including their award-winning portrait of serial killer Aileen Wuornos (AILEEN: LIFE AND DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER), which also served as the inspriation for the Oscar-winning film MONSTER. Among Broomfield’s other films are KURT & COURTNEY (a none-too-flattering portrait of doomed artist Kurt Cobain and his then-wife Courtney Love) and BIGGIE AND TUPAC (featuring two of rap's biggest and most self-destructive stars). Broomfield has received major prizes from the Sundance Film Festival, the British Academy Award, Prix Italia, Hague Peace Prize and the Amnesty International Doen Award.
Another special event that compliments the Festival's continued commitment to film/video as a tool towards creating awareness and solutions for social problems, is the Sunday, March 4th presentation of BEING HOMELESS: Student Short Film Competition. This special screening event, to be held at the Tower Theater, features a curated group of student-produced short films that are meant to educate the community and engage youth to show compassion toward people who are homeless. The contest was created by the Miami Coalition for the Homeless in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by community leaders from the South Florida activist community. The winning short film will be screened prior to a Gusman Premiere showing at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts later in the week.
