THE FESTIVAL BEAT !

Welcome to the N°909 release of our weekly newsletter View in your browser

Our thoughts go to the families of the victims of the COVID-19 in their flesh or their business; and we express our loud gratitude and solidarity with all of those who are fighting that disease. Our consideration and sympathy go to all the teams behind the festivals which had to cancel or postpone their edition. We understand all the frustration. We understand the work involved, we respect the tough decision and feel sorry for all the lost opportunities for our filmmaker friends in their quest to reach an audience.

We are here to help if we can. MOST IMPORTANT AT THIS STAGE STAY SAFE: SOCIAL DISTANCING...

We salute all creative initiatives who show some hope, please tell us how how you cope with the situation, we will report...

Possible postponement of the Cannes 73rd edition: your questions answered

IMG_0020.JPG

On March 19, 2020, the Festival de Cannes had announced that it could not go ahead as planned from May 12th to 23rd this year. That statement, made two months before the planned date of the Festival, was a consequence of the global crisis linked to the Covid-19 epidemic.

After having canvassed the views of its Administration Committee and consulted many professionals, from France and abroad, the Festival has announced that it will consider the possibility of a postponement of its 73rd edition to the end of June or the beginning of July, a plan devised in agreement with the Centre National du Cinéma, with the support of the Cannes City Council and thanks to the commitment of the Palais des Festivals and the Cannes hotel owners.

This decision has, of course, prompted a number of questions. We will try to respond to the most important of those and we will monitor the situation carefully as it changes over time.... READ MORE

Virtual Market update: The San Sebastián and Zurich Film Festivals unite to strengthen Industry Activities

zurich%20sanseb.jpg

We had heard a few weeks ago about the international talent agency CAA moving into the marketplace platform business for its clients (a new challenge to Cannes) creating a streaming platform with networking tools adapted to meet the needs of buyers and sales agents. The Goal was initially announced as alternate solutions to Cannes Market.

With all uncertainities pending around the Cannes dates and the questionned feasability of a market and festival taking place in Cannes end june / early july, CAA took a definitive advantage from the new shifts in global festivals and markets and hit another strike with the announcement of the joint initiatives by San Sebastian and Zurich.

this is the joint release we received today: Cannes has not commented yet. READ MORE

The Woody Allen Memoir... We Need the Dregs?

WoodyAllenbyMerrickMorton.png
by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

Who writes a memoir in defense of marrying their step-daughter? You guessed it: Woody Allen. And with his new memoir - that was axed by Hachette and brought back to life elsewhere - we all get to wrestle with this Shakespearean dilemma…

To buy, or not to buy? Whether ’tis nobler to read the slings and arrows pointed at Mia, or to take up arms against “Apropos of Nothing” and fling it against the wall.

Yes, that is bad Shakespeare from Hamlet Act 3, Scene 1, often dubbed “the nunnery scene” which, of course, Hachette employees were likely not thinking about during the standing ovation when Allen’s galleys were tossed in the trash, but hey.

Arcade published it, so what can you do except decide for yourself whether to purchase the bête noire of books? Arcade, a division of Skyhorse,  lists the following three lead-off books on its website - just follow along here for Allenseque irony: “Raphael: Painter in Rome,” “Love Behind Bars: The Memoir of An American Prisoner’s Wife,” and the topper “Hitler: The Memoir of a Nazi Insider Who Turned Against The Führer.”

Can you script something better than that?

On Woody Allen’s website, he leads with this quote: “If you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative.”

A knotted-bedsheet musical escape from the slick pop music hell-o of today, directed by Daniel Roher and based on Robertson’s 2014 book “Testimony,” it speaks to a different temperature in the American soul. A time when music was protest just by singing along...

An office complex wishes for a love story before demolition. THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova

The documentary film «THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova, tells a story of one of the most famous lamas, Pandido Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. His body is recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist objects of Russia and is being kept in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The Buddhist monks approach him as a living person.

Itigelov was born in 1852 and began his religious education at the age of sixteen years. In 1911, he was appointed the twelfth Pandido Khambo Lama as the Head of Russian Buryat Buddhists. Between 1913 and 1917, Itigelov was prominent in the spiritual life of Russian Empire. He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House Romanov and opened first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg. During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of "Buryat brothers", an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov's body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018

"A film that Google does not want you to see  - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.

Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.

There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.
