All the Films in the competition of the IV Kurdish film festival Moscow

 All%20the%20Films%20in%20the%20competition%20of%20the%20IV%20Kurdish%20film%20festival%20Moscow%20were%20introduced%201.jpg

Mansour Jahani - The IV Moscow Kurdish Film Festival, which will be held in the capital from September 18 to 22, announces the participants of the competition programs. The Feature Film Competition includes 7 full-length films, the Documentary Competition - 8 films, the Short Film Section - 14 feature films and 9 documentaries.

This year, the festival focuses on intercultural dialogue in general and cooperation with Russia. Continuing the traditions of previous years, as part of the cultural exchange, the festival will once again bring together filmmakers and film lovers from all over the world to show real masterpieces of Kurdish cinema. The geography of the participants is very diverse - the programs include films from 12 countries - Iraq, Turkey, Iran, France, Syria, Canada, the Netherlands, etc. A separate focus is on films about the Yazidis and their ancient Mesopotamian religion. This is also reflected in the festival’s visual concept: the central symbol of this year’s poster is a peacock feather, which is a powerful symbol for the Kurdish people, especially in the context of Yazidism, the ancient ancestral religion of all Kurds. It emphasizes the importance of preserving and popularizing Kurdish culture through cinema. The lilac background is reminiscent of the headscarves traditionally worn by Kurdish women. This element emphasizes the connection with culture and traditions passed down from generation to generation.

The Feature Film Competition includes the experimental film "Mosul, My Home", which is a walking tour of the ruins of Mosul in an attempt to explore the aftermath of war, as well as the energy of the city and its multinational residents; the drama "Transient Happiness", which captured the vulnerability of an idyll; the historical drama 1988, based on real events and telling the story of a gas attack at the height of the Iraqi-Iranian war in the border town of Halabja; the tragic saga The Horse about the hero's attempts to return to his own home after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime; and the sports drama Baghdad Messi, about how a ten-year-old boy with a serious injury experiences an unquenchable passion for football in war-torn Iraq. Also in the program are "Mahsa Laughed" about emigration as a way to escape from social and religious problems, and "Good Day" - the story of Kurdish theater actors trying to re-stage a play banned 25 years ago.

The 11 days of the Festival this year brought packed cinemas, extraordinary moments, and unforgettable encounters to the city of Locarno once again, capped off by the triumph of the Lithuanian drama Akiplėša (Toxic), winner of the Festival’s Pardo d’Oro of the Concorso Internazionale.

With a rich and varied program of films, the official selection of Locarno77 served as a robust defense of all possible kinds of cinema, spanning popular to arthouse, experimental to classically crafted, auteur-driven to collective. It was an edition that combined success at the Locarno box office – featuring many sold out screenings and long winding lines of ticketholders in the streets – with the thoughtful curation of sidebar programs that have come to define the Festival.

The prize list of the 77th Locarno Film Festival crowned Akiplėša (Toxic) by Saulė Bliuvaitė, an incisive portrayal of teenage girls and the crushing expectations imposed upon them. Also, in the Concorso Internazionale, Kurdwin Ayub’s Mond won the Special Jury Prize, while the Pardo for Best Direction went to Laurynas Bareiša for Seses (Drowning Dry). The two Best Performance Awards were given respectively to Gelminė Glemžaitė, Agnė Kaktaitė, Giedrius Kiela, and Paulius Markevičius for Seses (Drowning Dry) and to Kim Minhee, star of Hong Sangsoo’s SUYOOCHEON (BY THE STREAM). The Pardo d’Oro in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente was instead awarded to Tato Kotetishvili’s HOLY ELECTRICITY.

In Memoriam : The Posterity of Alain Delon in Asian cinemas:

Description de cette image, également commentée ci-après
Alain Delon during the shooting of Plein Soleil by René Clément (1959).

Alain Delon influences Asian actors and directors, including Hong Kong directors John Woo (The Killer) and Johnnie To (Fulltime Killer, Vengeance,... ). These filmmakers admire Alain Delon when he plays gangsters in Melville’s films ( The Red Circle, The Samurai, ...).

Johnnie To wanted to work with Alain Delon. He offered her the lead role of Vengeance, that of Francis Costello in 1967, as an allusion to Jeff Costello in Le Samouraï, which was played by Alain Delon. After Alain Delon refused, Johnny Hallyday is chosen by Johnnie To. Vengeance makes its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2009. It is screened at the Festival International des Cinémas d'Asie in Vesoul as part of a retrospective devoted to Asian films.

WARRIOR SPIRIT by Will George, 44 mins, CANADA, 2023
A CBC DOCS Original Documentary Film by PROTECT THE INLET FILMS and COEXISTENCE FILMS

Poster%20V6_1080x1350.jpg

A simple window washer and fisherman, Will George’s life transformed when Tsleil-Waututh Elders chose him to protect his Nation's lands and waters against the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion (TMX). Will challenges leaders like Justin Trudeau, striving to halt the threat Canada imposed on stolen land. There is a traditional story of a threat like TMX. The voice of Elder Xwechtaal narrates the beginning of the Two-headed Serpent story. As pipeline construction advances and protests escalate, Will intensifies efforts, ultimately facing criminal charges. Despite courtroom racism, he advocates for his people and territory. Returning to the Two-headed Serpent story, the Warrior grapples with people’s doubts, and his own. Will urges people to stand up against injustice and criminalization of Indigenous peoples for protecting lands and waters.

Wild Genius by Susan Kucera (Living in the future's past, Hot Money, 12th hour...)
Social impact documentary on evolutionary biologist Robert Travis,  1h:12minutes USA December 2023

Wild Genius portrays the exceptional life, career and mental health challenges of living legend Robert Trivers, the evolutionary biologist TIME magazine named as “one of the greatest scientists of the 20th Century”. Harvard psychologist and best selling Author, Steven Pinker calls him “an under-appreciated genius, and one of history’s greatest thinkers in the analysis of behavior and emotion.” An advocate for civil rights, Trivers’ straightforward logic makes an empowering case: understanding our evolutionary past isn't a life sentence but a liberating force.  Wild Genius is an entertaining and intellectual odyssey that challenges us to confront our evolutionary roots and societal taboos, daring us to think differently about ourselves and our place in the natural world. This isn't just the story of a groundbreaking scientist; it's an invitation to transform our understanding of life itself. We have the cognitive tools to know ourselves better and, by extension, to make a better world.
